i would try not installing the sata drivers during the xp install, i know i didnt and it installs fine, when i install the MB drivers later is recognizes it as a sata drive. if you dont, you can still use the hard drive, it is just recognized as an ide drive on the sata port. hope that helps

Is the 7800gt N516-AX by eVGA 460/1100 or 470/1100

it is technically supposed to be 460/1100, but some are coming clocked at 470/1100 out of the box like the N517 7800gt CO. it is a luck of the draw.

i would suggest getting rid of the rubber gasket, perhaps the block is not really mounted flush with the NB and there is a pocket of air, which may be why the temp spikes like you said. I definitely think your temps are way too hot for water cooling, i have just the stock fan on my a8n-sli dlx...
