    Larry's Rule

A 100 watt CPU for someone that pays 20 cents per kwh would cost $14.40 to power for a month. Am I doing this calculation right?

    Projects for an 8800GTS?

I'm sure the 8800 GTS still gives more work for the watts it uses compared to modern CPUs so I'd use it. Your GPU uses CUDA 1.1 so most projects support your GPU. I know for sure that Milkyway@Home won't though

    So I'm just wondering...

The idea of DC is individuals wanting to do good pooling their (nerdy) resources together to make for a greater good. DC wouldn't work if only a few of us were the only ones wanting to help in some way. DC is evidence that there are a large number of people trying to do good out there even if...

Worth it to upgrade from an i7-4820k to a faster quad core?

Overclock it! Even if you stop at the point before you need to raise voltages, you'll get a nice gain

there might be something to this android crunching on WCG

Thanks Fardringle! I'm not sure I want to bring a dead thread back alive so maybe we can continue here. I solved the heat problem by placing the phone on top of old CPU heatsinks I have that I removed the fans from. They provide a nice flat surface and the phone's temperature feels fairly...

there might be something to this android crunching on WCG

I've done some efficiency tests on work units on WCG and the my nexus 4 (snapdragon s4) consumes 4.8 watts when the battery isn't charging. The credits I get are twice what I get per watt on my core 2 duo laptop underclocked and undervolted. Now I gotta see if this nexus 4 can be undervolted...

WCG: Drug Search for Leishmaniasis WU times?

i'm looking at worldcommunitygrid.com under my grid -> results status i then change the filters to only show me valid results from the machine and project i want to see there's one where I used 3.47h cpu time / 3.65h total time for 116.7 claimed credit / 122.3 granted credit it seems to be a...

WCG: Drug Search for Leishmaniasis WU times?

I'm running a Pentium G2020 Ivy Bridge which runs at 2.9 GHz My times for this project are 3.05 CPU time to as much as 5.28 hours per core for work units that yield from 83.8 to 155.9 BOINC Credit. How many points did you get for that 5hr work unit? Because of the spread of times, it'll be...

    Q6600 to Haswell or Ivybridge?

LGA2011 has more PCI-E lanes plus Ivy Bridge-E will be on LGA2011!

    Q6600 to Haswell or Ivybridge?

Only if it'll affect your power bill that much to upgrade since the main gains will be in power efficiency and iGPU (if you use that at all)

Intel 8-core for $400 - When can we expect it?

Wasteful in the mobile segment yes but the desktop segment no especially since there are games and video editing software that use more than 4 threads The reason why Intel hasn't brought CPU computing capability up since Sandy Bridge is because AMD hasn't improved their CPU computing...

Intel 8-core for $400 - When can we expect it?

maybe if AMD gets competitive again I wouldn't hold my breath for that though (I'm a bitter former AMD fan)

    SSD in a Netbook?

You're running with only 2GB of RAM so you should see a big difference with the SSD. It won't be a fast machine by any standard but since your system is likely using the pagefile, going from a 4200rpm to an SSD will make a very large difference in your computing experience I did this with a...

AMD V Nvidia across various projects?

AMD cards seem good for astronomical and mathematical sciences while NVIDIA holds an advantage on biological research. One exception to this rule was when POEM@Home was going strong but I haven't been able to get any work units lately.

    AMD 5GHz 8-core CPU

On the long term, it might be better to take the initial hit and get a 3930k especially if AVX enabled applications come out

How much time does our older vid cards really have left?

HD 47xx and 48xx should be Open CL compatible so I don't know why they have to discontinue support of those cards =T

Are they better or worse at price for ppd? How about for double precision projects like Milkyway@home?

How much time does our older vid cards really have left?

There are programming issues since they are moving to OpenCL. Hopefully there won't be any reason to eliminate any OpenCL capable cards

Any word on Folding@Home for PS4?

It won't be a game changer and it won't suck. What's with the extreme talk? The app should come with relative ease since the PS4 should be able to run existing PC applications for FAH and BOINC. The harder part will be getting console gamers to do DC. Have you ever seen how hard it is to talk a...

    Haswell build

you could always OC the 965BE if you haven't yet also, AVX might be a consideration in the future so you'd definitely want an i5 over the 8320 in that case since the AMD implementation of AVX isn't great

    Will new consoles benefit AMD?

The intent of game developers should be there as well especially when they focus on the consoles. Writing for AMD's version of HSA is still supposed to be significantly easier than the work it took to optimize games for the PS3 anyways. If things turn out the way AMD wants, games will be...

I was a little underwhelmed by the performance of the 4 core kabini not being as much higher than the e-350 as I expected. It's a slight IPC improvement with double the cores. Anyone know the retail price of the PS4 and new Xbox? It would be better to compare GFLOPs with a similar priced PC...
