You can't show me many sticks of memory that will run DDR400 at 2-2-2-5 and DDR533 at 3-3-3-8. And like I said, if you have problems, how many companies will get on the phone with you about overclocking? Or RMA your memory becuase it won't run stable at 500MHz?
2 years from now, this will...
Get a USB 2.0 wall-powered enclosure that accepts IDE drives. Then you take out the person's drive and just mount it and power on. Newegg has them for like $20. You can find a dozen uses for these things.
Do you really need RAID5 for a home file server? A simple RAID1 setup will do what you want unless you and 5 buddies are streaming pr0n over gigabit LAN.
I have OCZ Plat EL REV2 1GB dual kit. At 400MHz, 2-2-2-5 it puts up 5000 something in Sandra memory. I run it daily at 500MHz 3-3-3-8 2T and 2.8V VDIMM and it puts up these numbers:
sandra memory
To me that's pretty good! It will run 533 at the same timings for 2.45GHz completely...
Not all Bartons are unlocked. It depends on the build week and it's pretty much a crapshoot. ALL Barton MOBILE CPUs are unlocked, but not all motherboards will run them. ASUS A7N8X Ultra boards WILL run a Barton mobile.
Mobile 2500s are good for at least 2.2GHz even undervolted. Because...
There is nothing like a SONY trinitron for gaming. I'm still using a Multiscan G400 19". I have a Dell 17" flat-panel that is much better for browsing but games just look great on the SONY.
I've used mobos and vid cards refurb from newegg. They are still running strong in friend's budget machines. But I've always picked GOOD ones, like ASUS boards and ATI factory cards etc.
The good thing is, Newegg will back it up for I think 30 days to protect you against a DOA or obvious...
There are no current games that benefit from using PCIx vs AGP. SLI is really the only benefit, and mostly because you can buy one card and add a second later as a cheap upgrade.
Goind with Athlon 64 would be a major upgrade for you though especially if you OC it, and an SLI board has the...
When AGP came out, people said the same thing. And the early cards, like Voodoo3, were basically just PCI cards on an AGP slot. Give things a couple years and you'll see the apps catch up with the tech.
I would look on Newegg for a refurbished ASUS A7N8X Ultra and get a 2500+ mobile which is around $80 and will clock to at least 2.3GHz. The ASUS board will run the mobile without a problem and you can find them refurb for $40-50.
Doom3 is so Vid limited that your overclock probably didn't help it a whole lot. You can see for yourself by going running the timedemo at both speeds. Doom3 benefits from Vid overclock almost exclusively and it's choking your 6600.
That's a good OC though, not much further to be had from...
I've had good results with Patriot memory in budget machines. If you are making a hardcore box though you should look at Crucial Ballistix, OCZ Rev2, or corsair XMS.
Try running your memory at 2T instead of 1T command rate. I've seen two machines with that same message where that solved the problem. Alternatively you could try backing off of timings but with overclocked A64 systems I've found that many don't run 1T stable.
2th.
I'm about to build a machine with the same specs as my gaming machine only on an ASUS SLI board and with a PCIx 6800GT. I'll be able to run them against each other and let you know how they compare. Just one 6800GT for now though, no SLI :(
Lower latency (2-2-2-5) PC3200 will outperform higher latency / higher clock memory until about DDR 440 or so depending on timings. By DDR500, forget it, the clock speed wins. I've looked at this myself with the OCZ Platinum Rev2 since you it runs DDR400 2-2-2-5 to DDR533 3-3-3-8 and others...
It will completely depend on who you talk to.
In my own experience, Maxtors have a great return policy but die regularly. I have a Western Digital 7.8G that I still use after years, and all my other drives are WDs except for a couple Maxtors. I've never had a bad experience with WD but I'm...
On bargain gaming machines I've built I've had good results with PDP Patriot memory. They have low latency PC3200 as well as higher latency PC4000. Good pricing. Look on Newegg.
