Possible to power-down individual hard drives?

That's a shame. It seems like it would be so easy to implement too. I think I'm going to go with a dock and drives-in-a-drawer rather than cramming them all into the case anyway.

Possible to power-down individual hard drives?

The options in Windows are to either have all hard drives power-down after X minutes, or to stay on permanently. My scenario is that I have a bunch of hard drives, some of which I need often and need constantly spun-up, and others which are rarely used and which I will often never access...

    Recommend a cellphone

My Bell contract is coming to an end soon (great) and I need a new cellphone. I don't know that much about them, at least relative to what I know about other electronics anyway. I'm in Canada, planning to go with 7-11's Speakout pay-as-you-go. I don't use it enough to justify a contract...

You don't even need Windows MCE anymore - the Zune software will also stream media to an Xbox 360.

Wireless network stuck at "acquiring network address"

The proset did it... I disabled the WZC, installed proset, tried to connect, same problem. Then I disabled the security, and it connected. So I re-enabled WPA-PSK, and it connected as well. Weird, but it works now, so whatever! :-) Thanks for your help, guys! I really appreciate it.

Wireless network stuck at "acquiring network address"

No, I didn't. First, I've tried that half-a-dozen times already. Secondly, I have disabled encryption, and thirdly, I also tried WEP instead, and exactly the same thing happens. Therefore, it's not a key problem.

Wireless network stuck at "acquiring network address"

I'm completely stuck here. I have an Asus M6Ne laptop with an Intel 2200BG wireless adapter. This thing worked just fine wirelessly until yesterday, when I had to reinstall Windows, ever since that it won't get an IP address from my router (Belkin F5D7230-4). My roommate's laptop is connected...

    Quick Question Peeps

Do you already have the cards? I ask because, in the circumstances, it makes more sense to get a tried-and-true NF4 board and a 7800GTX which will outperform two X800XT's anyway and most likely for less cash.

    Quick Question Peeps

It means that they can change the board at the factory to accept the new southbridges without redesigning the whole motherboard. This means there will be less cost to the consumer to make the changeover. It does not mean you can change it yourself.

    Time for a new HDD.

I would go with the SATA. Easier to cable, Seagate has a 5-year warranty and is quieter.

    Athlon 64 x2 and existing 939 mobos?

Maybe. It also depends on the revision and release date of the particular mobo within a given model. You can assume that. There's no risk of damage, worst-case scenario is it doesn't boot and you have to put the old chip back in and flash.

    Building A Server

Your biggest problem is going to be the connection. Asynchronous broadband just isn't going to cut it. Depending on how many games you want to serve at once, you will need T1, T3 or even OC3. There's also OC12 and OC48. T1 lines cost between $550 and $1,200 per month. T3/DS3 lines cost...

Do you use an Anti-Static Strap while working on computers?

I was a hardware pro in the 90s when static used to fry things if you weren't careful. I used one then but now I don't. I still make sure the case is grounded while I'm working on things, though. Having said that a lot of my old caution has gone out of the window. My entire computer is...

    What is the polling rate?

Polling rate, literally, is how often the computer polls the port to see if the status of the hardware has changed. If the polling rate is low on the mouse port the movement will not be as smooth since in between polls the pointer has moved further. This is one of those instances where an analog...

    upgrade worth it?

I would not say that that upgrade will be worth $700. Your rig will be fine for quite a while and is very respectable. If it were me, I would wait at least a year, and then see about M2, dual-core and whatever ATi/nVidia are doing at that time. There is a great overclocking guide in the...

Will this computer play Fear and Quake 4???

It'll run it. Best thing to do is to try those games out. If you like the way they play, good, if not, well, size up your options at that point and decide if it's worth the cost to you or not.

need help in deciding a PSU for DFI LanParty NF4 Ultra-D

http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10854&highlight=psu I found an Enermax 535W for pretty cheap. $90 CDN or about $75 US. It's on the recommended list for SLI.

Tell me why I'm wrong - I have to be

That's fair enough, and many people do it. As long as you are aware that you're paying more and getting less, then it's your money. You were fairly warned. :) If you already have it, might as well keep it, but I wouldn't buy any more Raptors. Just add large 7200RPM drives for data storage.

Tell me why I'm wrong - I have to be

Why? Don't listen to Tom's Hardware, they fudge their numbers in favour of Intel. If you're thinking media encoding, AMD is definitely no slouch and will hold its own with an Intel, and in all other tasks an A64 will wipe the floor with it's Intel equivalent. In encoding, raw MHz matters and an...

how many times can I re-write on a DVD+RW disc?

I believe they're generally rated up to about 100 times or so. It depends on the brand and the quality, though, at a certain point the media will start to lose integrity from repeated thermal stress. I just used those words to look smart. :)

Tell me why I'm wrong - I have to be

Forget the SCSI and all that. For a desktop system it's a total waste of money, and if you have it to burn, just send it to me instead. :) Seriously though, unless you're running a database server (and I mean a REAL database server like the ones in my office that contain account data for 13...

Building *powerful* commercial system for media playback

Those are not really a problem for any system. A 1GHz rig can handle those full-screen without slowdown. The only reason why you would need a powerful processor for video these days is if: 1) You are editing it 2) You want to encode/decode HD content (and even then, a 2GHz Intel or...

    Decisions, decisions..

They're all nice and solid at stock speeds. There's really no reason to sink extra money into a DFI or Epox board unless you plan on overclocking as much as the chip will allow and you don't to be held back by a board that can't do more than 300HTT. Just trying to save you money.
  31. F

Building *powerful* commercial system for media playback

That is overkill. Unless you're doing post-processing with the video, a much older rig would do fine. If it's important to have the SMP capability, maybe get an Athlon MP rig (Athlon XP with SMP capability). Tyan or Supermicro motherboards, PCP&C power supplies. SCSI hard drives generally...
