Here is my current rig:
DFI Lanpart NF4 Ultra-D
2X512MB OCZ VX GOLD
1X6600GT
1X 74GB Raptor
1 X NEC 3550A
2 X SX4000 RAID Card
4 X 160GB 7200RPM (RAID 5)
4 X 180GB 7200RPM (RAID 5)
I had an Athlong 64 3000+ installed in the system overclocked to 2160 (240X9). The system was totally...
OK, this does sound a bit counter intuitive. I like the Shuttle SD11G5.
http://global.shuttle.com/Product/Barebone/SD11G5.asp
(good starter for HTPC) and in the specs it says the only supported CPU type is the 479 pin Pentium M. Will my newly purchased Banias 1.5Ghz 1M L2 400SB Socket...
Get an Arctic Cool NV Silencer 6 rev. 2 to help keep those temps down. I am running a similar overclock (590/1190) and it dropped my temps by almost 20 degrees with virtual silence. Its well worth the investment to protect your card!
Great Post. I agree. I think AMD will have sub $300 dual cores as soon as they can manage it. If we could buy a sub $300 X2 it would definitly beat all the intel solutions in the price/performance department. (This is assuming the Intel Dual Core MBs stay at a similar price point as they are...
Any 12VDC source will work.
You could use the PSU in your pc by wiring the fan into your machine.
You could also get a 120V AC to 12V DC power adapter - these can be had at radio shack for $10 or less. If you can find some old power adapters for cordless phones or something like that you...
I would definitly spring for the all copper XP-90. It can remove a lot more heat from your CPU. You might be able to run your 92mm panaflo at a slightly lower RPM as well for lower fan noise with the copper version.
The other great thing about the XP-90C is the easily replaceable fan. Even...
The next cooler i will be buying is the Thermaltake Big Typhoon.

There's a recent review here
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20050607/index.html
That review looks at 10 big coolers. I'm a huge fan of...
I run my winchester at 1.6250V 24/7.
Runs just fine - Peak CPU Temps are around 48 degrees C. (with Silent Boost K8)
Read the overclockign quide - find the max memory speed and max cpu speed seperately so you can understand where your instability is coming from!
I would do these things way before water cooling.. . .
Buy an Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 6 Rev. 2. It'll cost about $40 but is a near silent cooling option for your 6600GT. It dramatically reduced the noise in my system but will still spin up when things get warm. (It will make more noise...
Even though M2 is coming out next summer 939 should be around for awhile thereafter. 939 has been out for quite sometime now and there are still some new S754 choices. Since we already know that X2 will be fully compatible with 939 you will be able to double the processing power on a 939...
Don't Bother - From my experiences most machines that run below 500mhz are pretty painfull in Windows XP. You dont need a machine like many build on the forum to be pleased with a WinXP experience, but I dont know about a PII 233 being very usable even if you can manage to install about 256mb...
The only reason I'll be buying the K8SD is the deal through AMD and the fact that ti will only be used as a file server and media encoder. I wont need to do anything that requires a good graphics card. I will likely use the onboard video.
Thanks Peter,
That was how i read the documentation as well. Tyan gives some misleading info in one of their manuals that implies that PCI card wont work in the PCI-X Slots but i think they are attempting to imply that 5V PCI cards wont work (which is true).
The manual for the board also...
1)Get a DFI Nforce4 board
2)Make sure you buya 6600GT not a 6600 plain. Otherwise its a great mid range card that can be had very cheap.
3) Nforce chipset
4)Yes, all SLI boards can and will run perfectly with only one card installed
Hey,
I am hoping someone with an Opteron Board might be able to help. I have searched the net and seem to be getting some conflicting messages.
The board is the K8SD Pro (I think its the same as the K8S Pro but supports dual core out of the box). It has 1 PCI slot and 4 PCI-X Slots on 2...
Agreed - may be a case of an unfortunate coincidence as well. (If the drive is in fact dead) When increasing the frequency on the PATA bus you can create unstable conditions, but the voltage is never increased to the HDD. I cant think of anyway this could result in permanent HD failure. It...
As long as you get a good video card designed for 1080i output (some of the current ATI offerings come to mind) either of these chips should perform just fine.
You could even go with the Value VX - its been overclocking very well according to some of the reviews.
Raptors are awesome - still the fastest SATA HD in most tests although some of the NCQ drives are making up some ground.
The first set of VX modules i got were bad too - I'm not sure if this is a consitent problem or just a few bad ones here or there.
My new ones run perfectly at 2-2-2-6 @ 250mhz. Its great memory!
You'll need to add a memory divider as your ram will most likely not clock over the 220mhz. Under the Genios Bios Setting and then memory settings choose DDR180 and you should be able to get a bit higher FSB (higher CPU speed)
I would read the overclocking guide as well - it should help
I would also highly recomend placing an 80mm fan over the memory. It made a noticeable difference in my case even though there is a 120mm at the rear of the case and a 120mm in the PS both very near to the memory. The air speed wasnt very high and the extra fan took car of this.
I would...
My 3200VX is running at 3.4V 24/7 with a simply 80mm fan blowing on them. They are warm but not much warmer than some value ram i have also had in the system.
I like the 2-2-2 timings. I have a feeling the bandwidth and tight timings will be even more important when the dual cores come out...
It seems interesting that when a new RAM technology strives purely for bandwidth and not latency that it seems to be uneffective overall. RDRAM bandwidth was huge compared to SDRAM of the time. DDR2 Bandwidth is much higher than current DDR.
Latency should be a bigger piece of the...
Hey!
A couple of things - these are opinion based - please dont get to excited.
I think the switch from DDR1 to DDR2 will not be a very large change. Assuming that the FSB of the processors do not change - which they are not going to for the initial 64 X2 chips as we know they will work...
i wonder if AMD is planning to impliment the patent they have on adding the Peltier process inside their microchips. It wouldnt curtail the overall heat output (it would actually increase it) but it does allow for individual areas of the cpu to be kept chilly.
I'm running my 3000+ at 2250 at 1.65volts with no adverse effects.
It certainly isnt fool proof - but it does seem to work for many as long as load temps stay under 55
Memory timings are not the issue. I cannt push the CPU past 9X253 without failing prime in less than an hour. This is with the memory running at 200mhz prximately).
I'll try setting HT to 2X in the morning. I tried at 3X and 4X with siiar results. I think i have just reached the...
Here's the setup.
DFI Lanparty Ultra D
Cooler Master Real Power 450
OCZ VX 3200 GOLD
Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester
Thermaltake Silent Boost K8
It seems that no matter what I do i cant get past 2300mhz (even with 1.63V) without the machine failing Prime95 fairly quickly. The memory...
Dynamic Disks allow you to adjust the partition sizes without deleting all of the data (sometimes). It always allows you to increase the size of a partition by adding free space to a partition.
It doesnt effect performance at all.
I wouldnt recomend making a boot partition dynamic. Its...
I dont own Far Cry right now and dont really plan to. I think at some point i am going to buy Empire Earth II and WoW both which should run just fine on my rig.
I researched a lot before i bought the components for my system. I like how the added memory speed increases the responsiveness of...
