If you go AMD you can get a 285 for around that price as well and it will perform well. I just did a review of one and was thoroughly impressed by it. With the 285 you will get all of the recent AMD tech that was put in the 290s while being in the 280s price and performance range.
I would say that MSI 290 is a good deal, but the 970s do seem tempting with the extra power to run even more eyecandy :p ... The MSI 970s are good, and with their Twin Frozr coolers if you ever want to, you can squeeze out a lot more performance.

Great to hear - So many times through the years have I thought it was one thing when its actually the other. The stupidest thing that gets me all the time is not being able to boot various boards when something is plugged into USB that it doesn't like.
You will likely need to modify your bios to achieve this and there are plenty of tutorials available for doing so. I don't know what it will do to your warranty, but I would say always backup the bios from the card first and keep it handy. Good luck
