RAM acting all funny

OK, Prime95 has now been running for 15 hours with no errors or warnings. In the readme it says to run for at least two hours. LOL - I think I'm gonna forget it about and assume the RAM is OK, or has such a minor fault that it will never show up...

Have done some more testing and I'm just as confused, if not more so... Microsoft Windows RAM tester (which runs off a bootable CD) also finds some errors (on a couple of different tests...). However, RightMark memory stability test (a Windows app) finds no errors on all 62 tests. I've also...

Playstation2 s-video question

Trying to connect a PS2 to a 19" RCA TV with an S-Video cable but cannot get any signal at all. I know the cable and the PS2 are both fine because I've just moved them from another TV where they worked with no probs. On the this TV tho it just can't get a signal from the PS2 and I have no idea...

350W Fortron enough for this system?

Those ratings mean nothing in the real world. Antec make quality PSU's and everybody knows that. Ford could say an Escort will run for 500,000 miles before the engine blows, where a Mercedes is only rated at 300,000 miles. Does that mean an Escord is better than a Merc? I think not...

Go for the Antec every time. I won't use anything else personally. the 350W will easily handle that system.

Best 1 GB RAM for about $100?

Yup, mine is running CAS2 at 200MHz. Not sure about how it performs with other settings as I've just built it and haven't started to play yet :)

Need power supply recommendation

I'd go for the Antec every time. Actually, I recently tried using an Enermax and it was faulty and kept powering off my machine - from now on I won't even consider anything other than Antec :)

Memory produces one single error in memtest86

Just try upping the VDIMM a notch or two. My TwinMOS throws loads of errors at stock VDIMM - but increasing it a tiny amount resulted in zero errors in over 6 hours of Memtest. Also, some G.Skill I just bought for another machine threw one error - upped the VDIMM and, again, no more errors.

AMD or Intel?

I'd go for the Intel. That sounds like the better all-round option for you, especially if you're going to be doing other things while encoding - Intel are much better at multitasking. And they are still more than good enough for games. I'd say go for the AMD if pure gaming performance is what...

I assume this is a faulty PSU?

Thanks for the replies guys - things have progressed a bit now... So the Enermax basically died a death and wouldn't start up again. So I ripped out the 400W Antec SmartPower from my machine and tried that in the new PC. It worked perfectly. So the Enermax must have just been a faulty unit...

I assume this is a faulty PSU?

It's an Enermax Noisetaker 370W. It should be more than powerful enough as it's quite a modest P4 system. I noticed straight away the rails looked a bit on the low side - the 12v rail in particular was reading as low as 11.5v, and usually 11.6v. I know you can't fully trust software readings on...

6600 or 9600xt both 128 upgrade 40 comps

6600 - it has 8 render pipes compared to 4 on the 9600XT. However, if it's AGP then there aren't that many 6600's to choose from as most of them are PCI-E. I think Newegg as a nice ASUS AGP version going quite cheap tho...

Thanks for that.... As for question 2 about the RAM, I've just discovered you have to press CTRL+F1 in the BIOS to unlock the advanced settings. And there are all the RAM timings :)

Celeron D 2.8 GHz

Most likely the rubbish video. My wife plays Sims2 on a 1.2GHz Duron, 384MB PC133 and a GeForce3 Ti 200. It plays just fine with medium/low settings.

Very, very, very, annoying problem with my new PC I built

There's also a way to turn off automatic restarting in Windows (can't rem where now...) so that if it encounters a critical error it will blue-screem instead of restarting. If you then get blue-screens it's a fairly safe bet it's tyhe RAM. If you still get restarts after that it's most likely...

No, you want a 12ms or 8ms for gaming. With a 25ms you will get some "ghosting".
