Does it make sense to sell my stocks and re-buy them?

It's called tax loss harvesting and it's common. You can't buy the same thing within 30 days or it's a wash sale. After 30 days, you're good, or if you don't want to wait buy something similar but different.

Are you sure they haven't been AI converted? Here's a nice illustration showing the differences between a AI and non-AI. Text If you have a pre-AI lens, and the edge of the mount has a ridge, then it has been converted.

Pre-AI Nikons will only mount on D40, D40x, D60. AI and AIS lenses can mount on any DSLR. I have many lenses from both categories and they mount just fine on my D40. Just no metering.

Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF vs f/1.8 AF

Keep in mind that with a 1.4, your depth of field is also thinner. Could be an issue for focusing if your subject is moving.

The best moon pic you can take?

Is the 055XPROB too heavy for short hikes? I'm considering between the 190XPROB or the 055XPROB. The extra load capacity is nice, but I'm worried about the weight. I'll be using this for short hikes and walking in the city.

What's your "hit rate" for photographs?

About 3% keep rate on average. And even with those keepers, I still have to heavily post-process them in order for the final result to be "upload worthy".

I use a D40 with very old manual focus Nikon lenses. That means no metering capabilities at all. The histogram is the only way I can tell my exposures are correct. I pretty much check it on every shot.

Which lens to get for my XTi?

The 28-75 has great IQ, but 28mm may not be wide enough on a cropped body like the XTi. I would go with the 17-50, and it can be had for not much more than the 28-75. You can get a 17-50 here for $394 after a Tamron rebate (rebate expires end of the year... which is tomorrow)...
