    Warcraft III - DotA

lol.... I'm down in California (Silicon Valley) on co-op with a few people from my University (from Canada). My roomate plays that stupid mod all the freaking time when he's home. He doesn't even want to go out and party or explore Cali, he sits there playing this boring, repetitive and...

    Cologne of choice...

My current primary is Jean Paul Gaultier. I'm looking for something new though, what's good and isn't very common? I know there are a lot out there that are good but are common, I'm looking for something that would be different.

Worst Movie Ever that you watched

I think I might have everyone Trumped here: Super Mario Brothers the Movie Double Dragon Movie Torque - Okay Fast and the Furious and 2Fast 2Furious were watchable for the cars and the races but this was just unbearable to watch!

Windows users, will you switch to LONGHORN when it comes out?

That's what I think Windows will end up being in say, 2015. I think Windows will be a desktop that comes with/supports a set of applications like KDE or GNOME running on top of Linux or some variant of it. As for Longhorn, It looks a lot better than XP, but there isn't much I can say about...

So, who knows how the hell to modify firmware?

I'm a firmware developer. You'll most likely also need some proprietary tools to actually load the code onto the drive. Some types of hardware require you to have a hardware security device ( like a security dongle ) in order to actually load onto it.

    the worlds dumbes hacker....

Yeah it seems kind of like a fake... it depends how recent this though. I don't think it's easy to nuke someone's computer like that any more, the security holes that are still existent on unpatched PC's are nowhere near as huge as the ones from the Win95 days. There are some "exploits" these...

starting to learn programming - which language to start with?

I'd recommend starting with a langauge that's good for learning. I'd hightly recommend something like Pascal, it tends to keep you from forming bad habits. Once you understand the basics, you can move onto a more "industrial" langauge like C, then C++. I'd advise against diving into an OO...

    Evo V Impreza

Geez why does any car-related thread turn into a flame war here? I've never driven or sat in either of these cars, although I've seen them up close. So based soley on looks, I'd go for the EVO mostly because I'm somewhat partial to zippy little cars. I don't think you can go wrong with...

Video editing - Recommend an app(s) to an amateur?

If you want to get serious about video editing, I'd recommend getting a G5 and Final Cut Pro. I've used Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro, the Final Cut Pro Suite is miles ahead in terms of functionality. Macs have always lead in terms of graphical work.

What is GM corporate thinking? Are they cut off from the world?

I see a flame war coming on... I think GM is making a good move by offering more powerful cars. Their cars were way too generic in the 90's.

    minimac

Actually OSX is inherently more secure than Windows mostly because of a lot of it being based upon open source and the fact that pretty much every program on it doesn't need administrator access to run ( unlike Windows where you pretty much need Administrator privledges to run a lot of things )...

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is out.

You're right. And personally I'd "sacrifice" the option to buy cheap no-name hardware and thus being "locked" into having to use high-quality hardware that runs on software that runs more efficiently and with better stability. And Apple has a wide range of hardware choices and is priced very...

    G35 Twin Turbo....

wow, do you know how much a project like this costs on top of the regular sticker for a G35? If I had the money, my dream would be to Take a brand new Toyota Camry, swap out the powertrain for the most powerful thing I could fit, but leave the car looking completely stock on the outside (...

    What job do you have?

Coop, Embedded Firmware Developer. Specialized in wireless networking and protocol stacks. I'm hoping to get into the graphics development front, I'd love to work for Pixar for a coop term, Alias ( creators of Maya ) is good too.

Car people: What is "Type-S and Type-R" mean?

Like most people pointed out, Type R refers to an option on some Honda vehicles that aren't sold in NA any more. The Type S line is available on Acuras, which are badged as Honda everywhere else anyway. I believe the Type S models have some minor HP increases by means of minor mods like tweaking...

If you're planning on having children, which would you rather have boys or girls?

I'd prefer to have one of each, first a son and then a daughter. I have no idea what I'd say if she brings home a guy one day. I think I'd only be able to sleep if the only male friends she had were homosexual until she was 25 and she was getting married.

Linksys router won't do "DHCP Renew"

This is a typical tech support response, but have you tried powercycling your cable modem? You can often diagnose whether the router is the problem by connecting it to another router and seeing if it obtains an IP. If you still have a problem, here's a very technical way to diagnose it...

i hate the term 'gas guzzling V8'

True for the most part, but those statements can be misleading. Fore example, you can't really compare the HP/fuel between all vehicles like that. And you definitely cannot compare displacements with rotaries because they're, well rotary engines. It's like comparing the displacement of a jet...

i hate the term 'gas guzzling V8'

Well, in theory at least, you could have a VERY small V8 that is less than 2L in displacement. I don't think I can' think of such an example, but the V12's used by Ferrari have relatively small cylinders compared to the V8's used in more common cars. You could probably build a small...

What's the dumbest thing you've done as an experienced computer user?

Mine: I installed a new wireless card, I decided not to put the screw in figuring that something would go wrong with my luck as ususal and I'd have to start trying different PCI slots. I boot my computer up, everything's fine so I decide to put the screw in. Being the clumsy oaf I am, I...

    American Muscle vs Japanese Muscle

Actually, you'd be surprised how much F1/racing technology makes it onto road cars. The cam technology used in racing a long time ago has made its way into regular road cars like the Camry. Very much of the newer technology for performance is "tested out" on the race track, and there are...

    American Muscle vs Japanese Muscle

Ok.. I'll bite. So, instead of rebutting my arguments, you make personal attacks and I'm supposed to be the immature rice boy? I joined this forum a few days ago, you don't know me, but automatically you label me as a 19 year old rice boy? No, I don't have an F1 car. I didn't realize that...

    American Muscle vs Japanese Muscle

1: If you're going to refer to something that was posted, at least refer to what I actually said. I like F1 ENGINES. I like how they are able to rev so high despite so many engineering hurdles with having to rev so high ( like the mechanics of opening/closing valves and the transmission...

    American Muscle vs Japanese Muscle

I'd say Japanese based soley on looks and their high-revving nature. A high revving racing engine appeals a lot more to me in a sports car, mostly because I've always been so fascinated by F1 Engines. It's all about preferences really.

    G-5 AND OSX

a G5 can handle most games pretty well and I believe there's an OSX version of WoW if it isn't already out yet. As for CAD work I don't think there's an OSX port available quite yet. Most drafting work is still done on windows but I forsee a port being released within the next two years...

What is a small yet cheap notebook?

I'd say go for a 12 inch iBook/Powerbook if you don't mind switching to OSX, you can get them very cheap if you are a University student from your on-campus Apple dealer. I'm not going to go into the advantages of using a Mac because I'm sure that topic's been done to death.

Fedora vs SuSE vs Gentoo for AMD64 vs Ubuntu... Which would you choose and why?

I personally use Gentoo, native support for AMD64 might be a little better. I've also found that Portage handles dependencies really well mostly because everything's source based, but expect to be spending some time compiling :) But then I'd also recommend booting up using a Knoppix CD and...

    Virus for Linux

I believe Linux is inherently more secure than Windows. One major reason is because you don't get access to the entire system if you aren't running as root. In that case the worst a virus on Linux can do is delete your personal files. On top of that, vunerabilities are fixed a lot more...

    Programming question

This is why 99% of developers dread visual basic :) Any sort of string manipulation in VB is difficult ( or at least grossly inefficient ). You can try iterating through each character in the string and then copying it over if and only if it's not a space. However I remember fighting with...

    Are processor dies too "square"?

Latency-wise, I'd think a sphere would be optimal, but manufacturing costs would be astronomical, not to mention how it would fit onto the motherboard. I think eventually though, processors might be cubes if we go multi-core, which would simply be several wafers that are stuck together on...

    future incarnation of the PC

Just a couple of critiques: Air-keyboard: I can't see this one happening because it seems rather uncomfortable. At least with the modern keyboard you can rest your hands against it. It's also expense, such a technology would seem expensive, and things do get cheaper as time goes by, but such...

    future incarnation of the PC

I personally can't see the internet being free one day. Someone still needs to broadcast signals if it's going to be wireless, that costs money. The only way I see this happening is if the entire concept of money is elimiated ( like on earth in Star Trek:TNG ). I think in the far future...
