    SLI or "CROSSFIRE"

There's not a whole lot of logic in that. Two cores + double the memory bandwidth < more vram? I think not. The 512mb variant of the 6800U doesn't really gain anything in terms of performance. Nextgen cards will be a little better, but it's not like it's going to be a night and day...

Looks like the 9800 pro rides again as the bang for buck mid range AGP solution ;)

Rollo, you're a troll. I played Doom 3 at 1280x1024 with 2xAF with my 9600 Pro. I am sure the framerate wasn't in the fifties, but it was quite playable, thank you. Television, which is perfectly smoothe thank you, runs at just under 30 frames per second? You don't NEED 40-50 FPS to enjoy a game.

    Best CPU for gaming server??

I concur, a San Diego core will more than suffice. Dual processor is only for machines that run multiple CPU intensive apps, since the system bus is too slow to share info between the two processors effectively like with a multithreaded app. That's why Intel's dualies are getting pwned by AMD...

AMD FX-57 likely to arrive in two weeks

Of course the FX line is faster at gaming, that's what the FX line is for (well, actually, it's for taking money from people with more cash than brains...or just a LOT of cash) X2 overclocked to 3.0ghz+ on water=wishful thinking, maybe...godly computerness, maybe...

Mushkin Redline :D If it kills your board, both it and the memory have a warranty so meh.

Pick up a 1gb stick and replace one of the 512s. It's s754, so you don't have to worry about dual channel :)

    New Computer Build

Don't knock Microsoft hardware..I have had a whole bunch of Microsoft peripherals, networking equipment, the whole lot, and never once have I been disappointed. You can have my natural keyboard when you pry it from my cold dead hands. And yes, I think I mooched that line from a review, though I...

    Proposed new machine build

You can definitely save money on the motherboard and bump up your video a bit, if you're not overclocking then you really are better off with an Asus or MSI board.

    DDR2

No more than 2gb. 4 or 8gb of memory IS overkill, unless you are running an enterprise level server.

    Rambus 184pin

I really don't know much about RAMbus ram, never having owned any. However, one of my friends has existing Rambus ram (on a s320 motherboard, Willamette P4) and he wants to get a new CPU+motherboard. He's getting a s478 P4 tonight with the Asus P4V533-MX mainboard. Will his existing rambus...

what do you think of Sony Vaio?

My father has owned two sony desktops. Never once has a part failed, they are both whisper quiet and quite cool (and the newer of the two has a Prescott in it), and the cases are easy to work in. All this, plus Sony's incredible style, beaten only by Mac in my opinion - good purchases. Vaio...

    A case that would match a G5.

I am sorry, but I find this thread quite pointless. There is no PC case that can compare to a G5 case, anywhere. The Lian-Li PC-V1100 is nice though...in my opinion, much nicer than the 1000. More expensive too, though :(

    Looks like AMD got smart

Shizza. Looks like it's the 3700+ for me then :D EDIT: Speed binning is not artificially limiting overclocking potential. Speed binning is testing CPUs to see what kind of speeds they can achieve, and the ones that can clock higher are binned as higher clock speed parts - ie the ones that do...

    Antec TX1050B

I'm thinking of picking one of these up http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=61050 At my local computer shop for $150 CAD. 1) The power supply in it is amazing, being 500w and modular...and the case looks to be great too. How is the combination of both only adding up to $150...

    How does RAID work?

RAID is all about protecting large amounts of important data. You put multiple drives on an array so that if one fails, you have a backup all the time and you can rebuild the data quickly.

    REQUEST FOR GAMERS BIOS!!!

You can save and load settings from four different slots on the motherboard with those three companies newest boards. And frankly, the DFI boards of today (the AMD ones anyway) are easily the best boards available on the market. More stable, higher overclocks translate to better stability at...

    P4EE 3.73@4.25 Wipe floor OF AMD 64

If you'd read the post up a bit in the thread, you'd know that it actually took a 5.2ghz clock speed to finally best the FX-55 (at stock). 4.2 was still embarassing.. And many games do prove to be CPU limited. If they weren't, there would be absolutely no difference in benchmark scores if you...

Should I get Windows XP Home or Windows XP Professional for my build?

Most people get pro because they feel it makes them more important, but in reality, Home will do you just fine. Get professional if you need to join a domain, that is the only really compelling reason until dual core. It's certainly the only reason I have Pro over home - I do need to join a...

How long till someone hacks OS X to run on XBox 360?

Well, given that the demos shown at E3 were running on G5s, it's not much of a stretch. The Xbox 360 really is just a super powered Mac computer underneath, so I don't think it will take long at all.

    Should I buy 2x256MB or 2x512MB?

Having four sticks is only a problem with AMD cpus, and you have an intel so you could. However, intel mobos benefit from dual channel, so get two 512s and replace the old ones.

More RAM, how much of a difference will it make?

None, really. RTS games and EQII might see a bit though

    6600GT to 6800GT

BFGs overclocks are really conservative and cost you extra money. MSI for nVidia, Sapphire or Asus for ATI.
