Post a pic of the city you live in.

I have lived in Zurich for all my life which admittedly makes comparisions difficult but I'm in love with the place. (If you or any other ATer makes it to Zurich you can drop me a private message if you need information or wish to meet for a drink.) Santa Ana looks nice judging by the photos...

Zurich, Switzerland population: 358'540 (2007) Not my picture, it was taken from a tower on the highest hill around the city.

Macrobe Flash Player runs like molasses

Some time ago I updated Flash Player to run again more than half of the Flash content out there. Now everything "works" again but the performance is deplorable. Especially when playing videos I often run into problems. The videos then play with 1-2 fps and the audio gets out of synch. I can't...

    Tiger on my G3?

A friend recently gave me some spare SDRAM for my "backup Mac", a 450 Mhz Blue & White aka Yosemite. A pity the board can only address 1 GB of the 1.75 gigs that are now in it. It is currently running 10.2 and I wonder if I should update to 10.4. I still have a family license lying around. I...

Stupid Annoyance of the day... It's not just that Illustrator crashed...

On the other hand I once had an alert in Acrobat Reader 5 stating that there was no error. Clicked "OK" and the application continued running. :P

Could it be true? First pics of the new Mac Mini?

Have a look at Macrumors' Buyer's Guide. The Mac Mini is dead in the water. Personally I believe it will be replaced with a new cube or eMac or similar sometime, but the current form factor is dead.

I'm late to this thread, hope you enjoyed your stay so far. Restaurant prices are a bit on the high side in ski resorts, I hope you treat yourself with a nice dinner, too!

    Going to Zurich

Here are some skiing recommendations. Renting should be no problem and if you don't want to bother with renting ski equipment, you could also rent a sledge and try a sledging route. :) Food: Raclette, Fondue, Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, Röschti, the Italian kind of pizza... If you want some...

    VOTE EARLY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apologies if this can be considered off topic, but I follow Swiss politics closely and maybe some of my conclusions about early vs. late voting apply to the American election, too... First I doubt that the mail-in ballot accelerated the voter's disinterest. It is true that the Swiss society...

Animal rights laws taken to the extreme

The laws may seem extreme to some now, but I'm confident they'll stand the test of time (except maybe the new dog courses). Switzerland has not always, but often been a forerunner in animal rights in Europe. For example laying batteries are already outlawed but the EU will only do so in 2014...

After working at CERN for 2 months, I've come to a realization

Isn't that a cultural difference ("coconut vs. peach")? Non-English native speakers have to learn that "How are you?" is not a question and "We should meet" not a promise. The British and Americans on the other hand have to wonder why other people are so cold and reserved at first.

Only a partial happy end, two athletes will participate in track and field disciplines. Five other Iraqis probably can't participate (judo, archery, weightlifting and rowing). (Source)

    Not in My Backyard!

I'm sometimes surprised how the Swiss direct democracy gets my country in the headlines. The fact that 100'000 Swiss support the minarett ban says little about the opinion of a 5 million voting populace. The chances of this ammendment are minimal, and the municipalities will continue to make...

    ***OFFICIAL*** European Soccer Championship 2008

Apparently there were three power outages/voltage hiccups and UEFA's own backup system failed every time. The German TV station is considering legal action because the number of viewers could've been affected.

    ***OFFICIAL*** European Soccer Championship 2008

Errr, the signal problems came from UEFA's own TV center in Vienna. It affected all stations except the Swiss public station and Al Jazeera. After the first problems, a German TV station and perhaps others too, switched to the signal of the Swiss cameras. A Germany fan has already made a...

Is this typical for a european company.

Yes, most Swiss leave the workplace for lunch. Depends on the company I guess. Hierarchy is valued, only a bit less than in Germany. The situation may differ in international companies... Office jobs often have presence times but less than an entire shift, p.e. 9-11 a.m., 2-5 p.m. And...

    Going to Switzerland alone.. recommendations?

This is the last week of the Euro soccer championship and several cities will have public viewing areas and many fans. The possibilities to get around in the four Swiss host cities with a car are limited, public transport should be fine though. Personally I've never travelled alone much, but...

    Disk Warrior 4

I used DW 4 to fix an external drive with a broken B-tree. It only took a few minutes to fix. If the internal drive is broken, you'll have to boot from the CD. It's straightforward, I don't know what to say that isn't already mentioned on the leaflet in the box.

The iMac is 10 years old now

woman imprisoned by father for 24 years (formerly: wtfbb)

I'm commenting on foreign law so take this with a grain of salt please: Either the repeat crime is just another factor, or there are two sentence ranges for the single and repeat offense. It's up to the judge where in the range the sentence will be. I think that European human right...

There's no warranty that he would be pardoned after 20 years if he gets life. I see your point but the Austrian law in this matter isn't based on the eye for an eye approach.

    Mac Mail

I suspect this is another form of the line break problem which is caused by different implementations of email standards (RFC). There's not much you can do: - Make sure you use the same mail client like the reciever :disgust: - Or configure Apple Mail to send HTML formated mails and make...

woman imprisoned by father for 24 years (formerly: wtfbb)

15 years for rape but the prosecution will aim for a conviction for the murder of the twin baby. Murder is 10 years to life sentence (which in practise is about 20 years). That is if this psycho doesn't bite the dust sooner. Under Austrian law, the convictions can't be mathematically added...
