Thanks for all of the feedback. The $400-$500 does include tax & shipping. I was thinking an 8800gs would be sufficient for 1024x768 res gaming, you think I'll actually notice any difference between that and an 8800gt at that resolution? The PSU is actually +18A on both of the 12v...

BSODs galore...

Aye, figured I'd toasted the mobo or the hdd. Although it ran fine for weeks after the botched cleaning endeavor, which puzzled me.

Strange crashing error...

I wish, parasite. Although I did underclock my card, and have since then not encountered the problem [which was happening constantly before]. Not a perfect fix, but so far so good.

Underclock on 6800GT

I changed both 2D & 3D, actually. My instability problem was happening during general Windows desktop use [web surfing, music management, etc].

Underclock on 6800GT

Doing some testing to try to find what's been causing instability in my system [see my thread], so I did a modest underclock on my 6800GT. Dropped it down to 335 Core / 800 Memory. Before I did this, the card was idling at about 45C CPU / 35C Ambient, now it's idling at 66C CPU / 47C Ambient...

Strange crashing error...

Welp, changed the error reporting in bios to speech, and now I get "System Failed VGA test" message when this "crash" occurs. Any ideas? Desperate for help here.

Strange crashing error...

Ok, have ruled out power coming on/off in house, and it's not any kind of power surge. It's not "backup mode" on the PSU and it's not any power saver settings [I have them all turned off]. I thought it might be a bad DVI converter [the thing I need to plug my old analog monitor into one of the...

Strange crashing error...

Kept AIM running while the PC did this strange lockup... I was able to hop on another PC and see my AIM still logged on for 30 minutes after the lockup... so it's not a complete lockup. Just video and sound. Any more ideas?

Strange crashing error...

Been having this problem for about a month now. Out of nowhere, the screen will go blank, my monitor power light begins to blink as if the computer had been turned off, then the sound locks up. Only way to get out of this is to do a hard power-down of the PC, then start back up. Seemingly...

Best Keyboard/mouse combo for up to 70 bucks

Logitech MX518 and a Logitech "Deluxe" keyboard. Should run you about $60. Personally, I find spending more than $20 on a keyboard to be a waste... better spent on a quality mouse. And don't get me started on $50 mousepads, bah!

which pci slot should my audigy go on

Hrm I just put mine in the slot farthest from the videocard to promote cooling and airflow. Seems to run fine there. Shrug.

comp won't boot

Check to make sure the connection between your PSU and the "On" button is working? I had an old P4 machine that had a bum power button, had to hold it down for about 10 minutes to get it to boot up. Once it booted, it ran fine.

A8N-SLI amd 3500 overclock help please

I was having windows corruption errors at even low HTT's w/ my board until I switched from SATA1 to SATA3. Am running the 1008 bios revision [04/29/05]. It can't hurt to change it up, just a switch of the plug. Or not, if you're not having any problems.

2200 to 2400 is a 9% increase in clock speed. Not factoring in cache size.

to wait, or not?

If it were my money, instead of the 4200+ [2.2ghz x2] and a 6600GT, I'd buy a 3500+ [2.2ghz x1] and put the $270 savings into a 7800GTX. I guarentee you'll perform much better in games than the X2/6600GT. Four years seems like an unlikely time for a gaming machine to last without upgrades...

All depends on the amount of money you have devoted to the new machine, your usage priorities [gaming, multitasking, schoolwork?], and your exact definition of a "few years" [2,3,4?]. Guys will post telling you to buy the cheapest stuff and overclock it to higher spec, others will tell you that...

Well, the 3800+ Venice has got a 9% increase in clock speed over the 3700+ San Diego. Thus, you get an increase in price. While the 3700+ San Diego may be a better value for an overclocker, the majority of AMD's customers will never overlock their chips.

No, not really. Although I don't use it for watching movies [THX, DTS, etc]. Just games and music. Upgraded to the ZS only because I came upon an excellent deal, and was able to unload the Value.

Talk to me about SLI

I run BF2 at 1024x768 resolution with everything on High and it runs flawlessly. I have yet to experience this stutter I've been hearing about. Could be I'm an exception to the rule though.

Sound "popping" in some games

Try lowering the volume in windows and compensating by increasing the volume of the speakers. Sometimes when my volume was set too high [above 75%] in windows, the speakers would pop [this was on an older rig w/ a SB Live 5.1].

Most set to performance actually. At least the ones posting their results all over forums like these. Set to performance, reboot, and run it again. See if you get any decent gains.

There are so many things that go into that score. Oboard sound vs. soundcard [5% gain right there], memory timings, CPU, drivers, settings [set to performance or quality?].

Well, thought it might help. ::shrug:: You're aware you can compare your score to other similarly outfitted rigs on the Futuremark website, yes? That may help to determine if your rig is performing upto spec or not.

Wow, CPU seems pretty damn cool. My Everest temps read as follows in a poorly A/C'd apartment... Motherboard 30 °C (86 °F) CPU 35 °C (95 °F) GPU 50 °C (122 °F)...

Trying to replace a SB Audigy2 Value w/ a SB Audigy2 ZS... the Audigy2 Value has been in the slot for two weeks, and it's quite warm in my apartment. I am completely unable to pull this card from the slot... almost bloodied my finger trying to pry it out. Tried gently rocking it in the slot...
