Vibration resistant HDD that isn't a SSD?

Look into automotive grade drives. I use the Seagate EE25 in my CarPC. It's an extremely tough drive that is designed for high vibration, extreme temperatures, and extreme altitudes. I believe in their product page they show the applications of this drive...one of them being used as a video...

    HDD duty cycle

Im sure alot of people will comment saying that they've used X brand of consumer drive operating 24/7 and it's lasted Y years so there must not be any difference. Would be interested in hearing some definitive facts or statistics that show enterprise or DVR grade drives are physically more...

    Need to vent against Sony

That's ridiculous, why would the battery and charger not covered under warranty? I can understand that the battery is usually only covered for a year but the adapter is part of the notebook. I would say to try to contact Sony customer support directly, or go back to the store and talk to...

Buying a 1994 Ford Ranger with 470,000 kms?

Yup and I think the government here has a program where they give you $150 to retire an old ride. I just dont want to risk the truck breaking down in the middle of the street and having to foot a tow bill.

Buying a 1994 Ford Ranger with 470,000 kms?

So I've been looking for a cheap beater truck to learn how to drive stick and I came across a 1994 Ford Ranger 2wd listed for $550. I offered $300 and the lady accepted. I have arranged to go see the truck tomorrow. The lady says the truck is in good running condition (does not burn or leak...

Any realistic games to learn to drive stick? I have a Logitech G25 wheel

I have the G25 laying around so I figure if I can learn anything from it, why not. If you dont think anything can be learned, fair enough. From some of the replies here, it almost makes it sound like Im not willing to drive the real thing and that I have unrealistic expectations of being able to...

Any realistic games to learn to drive stick? I have a Logitech G25 wheel

I have driven a real manual car as stated in my first post, but I just dont think I did as well as I should have. I'd rather practice the right motions and have that ingrained in my memory before going out again on the real thing again. I have GTR2 and did alright in that game, even made it...

Any realistic games to learn to drive stick? I have a Logitech G25 wheel

Before anyone laughs, yes, I know no game is going to be like driving the real thing, but Im just wondering if there are any games or simulators that would be good for practicing how to drive stick with a Logitech G25 racing wheel? It's got a 6 speed shifter and clutch. Just trying to learn the...

Server Drive - Green, Blue, or Black?

The WD Greens have an advantage over the Black and Blue for the OP's purposes. If you look at the spec sheet, the Green has a lower error rate (1 in 10^15 vs 1 in 10^14). Also, I think the WD Green has the edge over Seagate's LP series since for roughly the same price, they consume less power...

Is this a good time to buy BP stock?

The real question is, how long is it going to take BP stock to fully recover? I am still undecided on BP...perhaps waiting for it to hit 35 or 30 before I commit. Another stock I've been watching is Transocean. Their stock has taken a big hit similar to BP, but they may potentially recover...

The Acer might seem overpriced initially since you can build a better performing machine for the same price, but keep in mind that over the long term, its lower power consumption will pay itself off.

Extremely low power/heat build for full house audio

The Intel Atom processors are very efficient, but it seems like the chipset in many of the Atom motherboards is not. I would estimate that with an Atom build, you might be sitting at 30-40w. The LCD itself might consume 20-30 watts. Another possibility is maybe use a laptop or netbook instead...

getting SMART info off a Sil 3114 controller?

Anyone used the Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II?

The T40 and Z2300 are completely different kind of speakers. The T40 will give you better (more detail, accurate, cleaner) mids and highs but will severely lack bass. Z2300 gives you average mids and highs, but more lows. Notice I said more lows, not better. The bass on the z2300 tend to be...

Need a small SSD for Win 7 install and a few games

I saw some 32GB for $50-$75 CAD during boxing day. But if you are trying to find something that will give a noticeable difference, then youll have to spend more than that. Avoid JMicron controller based units. Keep an eye on OCZ, they usually have rebates. I just picked up an OCZ 60G Summit...

Are larger HDs more susceptible to failure?

Maybe it has something to do with density? As you pack things closer, they are more susceptible to shock and vibration since the heads require more accuracy to read/write.

    Seagate hard drive is loud

I had a Seagate 500GB notebook hard drive and it sounded like fingernails scraping on paper. It appeared to work just fine and did not have any errors, but I ended up returning it for a Western Digital because it was very audible even in a moderately noisy room.

    WHS First Timer Build

If you are going for energy efficiency, maybe take a look at motherboard based on the G31 chipset, they are supposed to be pretty efficient. As for the CPU, maybe a Celeron 430? I also agree that it's a bad choice to go with the Seagate 7200.11. Look into the WD Green, that's more than enough...

    Opinions on Seagate Barracuda LP

Can anyone confirm that the Seagate LP series also has excessive head parking like the Green series? It might not show up in SMART, but all you have to do is listen carefully. Fortunately, as far as I know, the Green drives do not seem to be any more or less reliable than normal drives that do...

Is it me or the disk?

I was thinking more of the physical stresses to the hard drive. I believe when it gets an "off" signal, then the drive has the chance to park it's heads first. Whereas when you suddenly cut power, it will have to use the rotational energy of the spinning disks to generate it's own power to park...

Is it me or the disk?

^Are you saying perpendicular recording and higher densities make drives less reliable? I wonder if the high density makes them less accurate. Harddrives: shutting down or leaving computer on?

Ive always been interested in this, but unfortunately, I dont think there is much (or any) scientific data to either side. Everything seems to be just logical speculation. Unless you are turning your drives on and off hundreds of times a day, I dont think there is much difference. Personally, I...

    Opinions on Seagate Barracuda LP

No, you cannot control the head parking in windows. When it is idle after 8 seconds, the heads will automatically park on the WD Green. On the previous generation, you can see in the SMART data, everytime the heads park, the value for Load Cycle will increment by one, but with the newer models...

    Opinions on Seagate Barracuda LP

Don't alot of the LP drives frequently park the heads? That's one of the reasons how they save a tiny bit of power...because of the reduced drag from the heads. But yes, I have to say...my WD10EADS parks the heads VERY frequently. Like after 8 seconds of inactivity...regardless of OS power...

Audio out of sync and lag when playing high definition movies

The sound is coming before the picture. Not that it makes a difference, but the video is hooked up to a bigscreen. Is this true?: early predicted failure of WD5000AACS due to high load cycle count?

My WD10EADS 1tb WD green has this problem. With the newer WD Green series, they still unload after 8 seconds, but the load cycle is not recorded in SMART. So the only way to tell is to listen to it. However, I still have yet to come across anyone claiming to have a hard drive fail because of this.

    What's a quiet hard drive

I would say the WD Green series, except it parks its head after every 8 seconds of inactivity, making a faint click sound. Just something to consider.

Is it the head parking? Some Western Digital drives like the WD Green unloads its heads way too often.

Attempting to get a Refund for not accepting the Windows Vista EULA

I think the OP has already made up his mind, why bother arguing. I think the OP is so blinded by his fanboy attitude towards Linux that he feels threatened by anything that is a competitor to Linux (Microsoft). Although you might not agree, the fact of the matter is, for the majority of...

^^ This is very true. You are not going to hurt Microsoft at all by doing this. Chances are, if you pursue this further, you will probably get your money back. But do you honestly think that by requesting a refund from Lenovo, then in turn Lenovo will take the money from Microsoft? They will...
