Im surprised there's no mention of the 4Runner or Pathfinder. Both excellent SUVs and very reliable. I've got a Pathfinder and love this thing.

Vibration resistant HDD that isn't a SSD?

Look into automotive grade drives. I use the Seagate EE25 in my CarPC. It's an extremely tough drive that is designed for high vibration, extreme temperatures, and extreme altitudes. I believe in their product page they show the applications of this drive...one of them being used as a video...

Need to vent against Sony

That's ridiculous, why would the battery and charger not covered under warranty? I can understand that the battery is usually only covered for a year but the adapter is part of the notebook. I would say to try to contact Sony customer support directly, or go back to the store and talk to...

Server Drive - Green, Blue, or Black?

The WD Greens have an advantage over the Black and Blue for the OP's purposes. If you look at the spec sheet, the Green has a lower error rate (1 in 10^15 vs 1 in 10^14). Also, I think the WD Green has the edge over Seagate's LP series since for roughly the same price, they consume less power...

Is this a good time to buy BP stock?

Quiet 1TB HDDs: My experience.

The WD Green is quiet when spinning, but it parks its heads ALOT which makes a loud tick each time.

The Acer might seem overpriced initially since you can build a better performing machine for the same price, but keep in mind that over the long term, its lower power consumption will pay itself off.

I have a brand new WD Green 1.5TB, been running only 4 hours and

Extremely low power/heat build for full house audio

The Intel Atom processors are very efficient, but it seems like the chipset in many of the Atom motherboards is not. I would estimate that with an Atom build, you might be sitting at 30-40w. The LCD itself might consume 20-30 watts. Another possibility is maybe use a laptop or netbook instead...

getting SMART info off a Sil 3114 controller?

Hmm I dont know anything about onboard. With my PCI SiL3114 based card, I can just go into the device properties in device manager and there is a section that lets you upload new firmware from a file and update it.

Im interested in knowing too, since I have a 4 port PCI card with the SiL3114. Did you try different SMART tools to check it? Try going to the Silicon Image site and updating to the newest firmware.

Are larger HDs more susceptible to failure?

Maybe it has something to do with density? As you pack things closer, they are more susceptible to shock and vibration since the heads require more accuracy to read/write.

Seagate hard drive is loud

I had a Seagate 500GB notebook hard drive and it sounded like fingernails scraping on paper. It appeared to work just fine and did not have any errors, but I ended up returning it for a Western Digital because it was very audible even in a moderately noisy room.

WHS First Timer Build

If you are going for energy efficiency, maybe take a look at motherboard based on the G31 chipset, they are supposed to be pretty efficient. As for the CPU, maybe a Celeron 430? I also agree that it's a bad choice to go with the Seagate 7200.11. Look into the WD Green, that's more than enough...

Opinions on Seagate Barracuda LP

Can anyone confirm that the Seagate LP series also has excessive head parking like the Green series? It might not show up in SMART, but all you have to do is listen carefully. Fortunately, as far as I know, the Green drives do not seem to be any more or less reliable than normal drives that do...

Is it me or the disk?

I was thinking more of the physical stresses to the hard drive. I believe when it gets an "off" signal, then the drive has the chance to park it's heads first. Whereas when you suddenly cut power, it will have to use the rotational energy of the spinning disks to generate it's own power to park...

No, you cannot control the head parking in windows. When it is idle after 8 seconds, the heads will automatically park on the WD Green. On the previous generation, you can see in the SMART data, everytime the heads park, the value for Load Cycle will increment by one, but with the newer models...

Don't alot of the LP drives frequently park the heads? That's one of the reasons how they save a tiny bit of power...because of the reduced drag from the heads. But yes, I have to say...my WD10EADS parks the heads VERY frequently. Like after 8 seconds of inactivity...regardless of OS power...

Is this true?: early predicted failure of WD5000AACS due to high load cycle count?

My WD10EADS 1tb WD green has this problem. With the newer WD Green series, they still unload after 8 seconds, but the load cycle is not recorded in SMART. So the only way to tell is to listen to it. However, I still have yet to come across anyone claiming to have a hard drive fail because of this.

What's a quiet hard drive

I would say the WD Green series, except it parks its head after every 8 seconds of inactivity, making a faint click sound. Just something to consider.
