While dial up sucks, it's come a long way.. For services like 3G and AOL, that know some people have to use dialup they make the most of it with: Web Proxy/Cache of HTML and images, compression, etc.. This doesn't help much for people that stream media (audio or video)

This could largely depend.. if you are doing DNS and DHCP on the inside, I would check the following.. 1) what is the default route? I'm guessing your WAN side of the server is a static and public IP, and you have a gateway to point to your provider.. likewise on the LAN side is DHCP also...

Home or Business Gigabit Ethernet Speeds -

We have fairly easly pushed 800+Mbps speeds (much more than that on Ethernet and you will start having loss) through Cisco Catalyst 3550, 3560, and 3750's. This was with Dell 2650/2850 and 6650/6850's though.. Devistater is correct though.. most transfer rates are reported in MB (Bytes)...

Cisco's VTP: VLAN Trunking Protocol

If VTP works for your type of setup, and you won't be using so many VLANs that you don't want populated to all switches.. then I say use it.. Pick you central switches to be the server(s) and absolutely set a password.. You can avoid the problems the skeptics have.

Did you colapse the both of these internal networks into one? So that you can route to either gateway from a single NIC, thus not requiring a NIC on each separate network? If the linksys allows you to place static routes on it then you could just put the 10.0.0.0/8 route on the linksys...

Though this is resolved.. Cat5 will not (or should not) down throttle a connection negotiation to 100Mb. It will negotiate fine at 1000Mb however typical Cat5 will typically be limited to 250Mhz (or Mb).

Can crossover cable work with a hub/swich/router?

There are a number of Cisco switche models that don't have uplinks.. however, very seldom does that matter. 2900, 3500, 2950, 2970, 3750.... Even on some of the older models (2900 and 3500) that have model with uplink ports, you still have to use a cross over.. The safe rule is to always use...

Can I set up VPN link w/o a VPN rounter?

If you are only port forwarding RDP (port 3389), or VNC if that's the way you want to go, then you should have few problems with security. I wouldn't make the internal machine a DMZ host though. With only 1 port forwarded, you're at a lot less risk.

Buying a lab to study for CCIE...

I think you really need something in between these 2 labs. While the L3 switches are certainly needed, it does drive the price way up.. You will need the ISDN simulator, the ATM isn't needed really, as you can get by with just univercd study on config, certainly 10 routers isn't needed either...

How would you want to see this info, or what is important? Do you want to know which switch (3Com or Dlink), the port on that switch, the IP of the host, the name of the host (Netbios, or FQDN), MAC address, etc.. First, at a minimum each of the switches would have to be manageable...

Absolutely you will get poor speeds on a hub even with only 2 computers on it. Each computer is transmitting and receiving, and on a hub (which is only half duplex), this can't be done at the same time without causing collisions. I guarantee you that you will see a drastic performance change...

cat5 vs cat6

I would still say don't use cat6. Even industry wide, there is almost no use for cat6 over Cat5e. In fact normal Cat5 will do GigE just fine, much less Cat5e. Cat6 hasn't become a standard or required for anything, so I would save yourself the cost of cable/materials, and the installation...
