Advantages of External Drive?

Only one reason - portable. If you don't intend to do that, it doesn't make sense to buy external drive for desktop pc use.

17" vs 19" LCD: Worth the price difference?

18" or 19" costs too much more than 17", 20" costs just little bit more than 19". Jump to 20" and get 1600x1200 regular 4:3 ratio, otherwise stay at 17". I can't find any benefit for getting 18" or 19" today.

Realtek ALC850

It's just an "AC'97 Rev 2.3 Audio CODEC", the sound processor is embedded in the motherboard's chipset, together they form the onboard sound card. It's a decent codec, but it can't provide sound by itself. http://www.realtek.com.tw/prod...2.aspx?modelid=2003101

For harddisk, OEM (we call it OEM but it's not actually OEM, a real OEM HD is the one used in brand name computers with their sticker replaced) has same warranty as Retail, some even has better warranty than Retail (sometime ago Maxtor OEM 3 yr vs Retail 1 yr). Harddisk's OEM/Retail warranty...

Toshiba has so many recalls, stay away from Toshiba. Gateway today is like Dell, sort of generic BTO, good buy. For the best, only buy HP-Compaq business line or IBM.

What is high density ram?

In the old PC133 memory age, one moment ram price was extremely high, cheap memory module makers use 32Mx4 type ram chips to make cheaper 256MB module. Intel chipsets only support 16Mx8 type ram chips for 256MB module. 256MB module using 32Mx4 type ram chips don't work in Intel chipset...

anyone know of a way to tell 16x8m ram from 32x4m ?

Wrong, 32x4 or 16x8 is not about the number of chips, it's about the chip's internal architecture. You can only know from looking at the chip's part number and check the manufacturer's datasheet. A 256MB double side module has 16 chips (8 on each side) no matter the chips are 32x4 or 16x8.

realtek AC97 vs SB Live

Realtek AC97 is just the codec, it's the sound engine in the motherboard chipset south bridge or single chip hub and the cpu to handle the sound processing. NF2 with Realtek codec is comparable to SB Live (built-in codec inside the main chip).

What happens if I stick PC133 memory into a PC100 slot?

16x64 means the module is 128MB, for intel chipset, the 8 or 16 ram chips used on the 128MB module must be 16x8 (16MB) or 8x8 (8MB), cannot be 32x4 (16MB) or 16x4 (8MB).

Maxtor warranty, my drive had 3 years, now they say 1 year.

Normally in the warranty policy statement, manufacturers claim they reserve the right to change the policy at any time without prior notice, or deny the warranty. There is no protection to consumers.

My moron question of the week

retail and oem cpu can have different manufacturering plant, manufacturering date, stepping, etc. sometimes people find a good overclocking chip from one plant/date/stepping, resellers will mark up the price if they have such stock, that can cause oem cpu being higher price than retail one.
