    Tom's vs. Anand: Dell 2001FP

And to think I was going to recommend the Samsung 213t :Q I've been using it for six months now and love it (I liked the image quality better than the Dell).... at $1,100 it is definately sticker shock. The 213T is really a sweet piece of gear. I have had one for about a year now, and I love...

    Tom's vs. Anand: Dell 2001FP

crleap, I think that you have it backwards. I have always noticed a decided bias in AT's reviews against AMD and against NVidia graphics products. Tom's has rarely shown the same bias.

Aspire dreamer 2 case doesn't come with a pc speaker?

I bought one for my son. The power supply is pretty weak. I chucked it and put in an Enermax 425. He now has an ASUS A7n8X-E Deluxe, 9800 Pro, dual WDM800 SATA drives and a Gig of Corsair XMS 3200 memory. The case is pretty nice, aside from the power supply.

Which is faster? AMD 2600+ or Intel P4 2.4?

I run SETI@Home on a couple of XP2600+ and on one rig with a P4 2.4. The XPs kick the P4's butt by a 20% margin. There is no comparison.

Drive Performance: 2m & 8m buffer ATA vs. SATA?

This Serial ATA just aint ready for prime time. I'll stick to SCSI 160 or SCSI 320. Pure blinding speed.

Twice a year I clean out the dust bunnies. More often then that and I would have to find a different line of work.

AMD CPU's? or Intel CPU's? Which do you love more?

Since there are very few people who contribute to these boards that are so rich that they could care less about price you question is terribly insignificant. For 99.99% of us the price of the component is quite significant. It is pretty naive to ask all of us how we would rate computer...

OK, I Screwed up by buying a Radeon video card

Markfw900 I will not accept that it is a requirement to reformat or re-partition a computer's hard drive to install an ATI video card. This is unacceptable. Come on, now. This is 2004. Nvidia does not require this extreme measure. The 5700 Ultra works just great on my son's computer after...

OK, I Screwed up by buying a Radeon video card

I didn't spend $500 for that card. I got the 9800 Pro for $230. And, actually, your logic is strange. Why should I have to spend more time fixing a problem on a video card that is more expensive, really expensive. Rolls Royce drivers don't expect more problems with their cars than Volkwagen...

OK, I Screwed up by buying a Radeon video card

Nick, none of the video card manufacturers call for a 3rd party software (driver cleaner) to install a new video card. They all call for you to do a full uninstall of the previous video card drivers. Yes, that is all ATI asks for in their instructions. And a reformatting of the hard drive --...

OK, I Screwed up by buying a Radeon video card

Nick 1985. For 5 years video card manufacturers have recommended a full uninstallation of video card drivers and support software when changing video cards. Most sub-100 IQ computer users are aware of this fact and comply with it when they change a video card.

    CATALYST 4.3 AVAILABLE!

It is really funny to watch you ATI lovers announce the latest set of partially functional Catalyst drivers. Man, I wish that I had never bought my 9800 Pro. This is such a sad pursuit of drivers. Why can't ATI just make it right the first time, or second time, man, even just the 3rd time.
  18. S

OK, I Screwed up by buying a Radeon video card

Ok, but when you buy a computer product that has software (drivers) and hardware, the product is the sum of both. If ATI can't produce a fully functional set of drivers for the video card, the hardware is worthless. I don't care whether there is no problem with my video card. I care whether...

Calling all asus k8V deluxe owners...some questions for you

Nah, this board is not unreliable. But you do have to tweak the memory settings to get any operating system, especially Win XP to run. I had a myriad of problems getting Win XP to install on my rig, until I changed the memory settings in the BIOS from "by speed' to a manual setting. Just...

OK, I Screwed up by buying a Radeon video card

About 3 months ago I started a flamefest on this forum by asking why I should buy an ATI card. I have been a staunch Nvidia fan for years, and I have had no problems with the GeForce cards. I have bought GeForce 2 Pro's, GeForce 3 Ti200's, GeForce 4 4800's and many more. They all worked fine...

    DFI or Gigabyte?

If you want to use this mobo longer then a year, I would suggest that you get the Gigabyte. DFI does not support their hardware very well, and if you are interested in installing a faster CPU in the mobo later, DFI's web site will tell you nothing. I have a DFI AD77 Infinity, and I wanted to...

Asus mobo's worth the extra $$$...?

I have built many systems over the years and I have had virtually no problems with ASUS mobos. I have built systems using the A7N8X, A7V333, P4S8X, K8V Deluxe, A7V266, A7V133, P4B-F. They have all performed as advertised. One thing others may not talk about is their support. Their web site...

    New Egg Trusted?

I have purchased several thousand dollars worth of computer gear from them over the past two years and I have only had one problem. They sent me a GeForce MX 440 once when I ordered a GeForce 5700 Ultra. I shipped the MX 440 back to them and had to pay a restocking fee???????

AMD Man - Building A P4, Need Help

    Which graphics card to buy?

I have an Athlon 64 3200+ rig with an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, and it is a screamer. No problems with between the 9800 Pro and the ASUS K8V mobo. It is a sweet combo.

Who's had catastrophic power supply failures?

I have never had a power supply failure in the 22 systems that I have built over the past 10 years. I have seen a few failures in some friends systems, but each of them were not using Surge protectors for their computers.

    Which A64 mobo - nForce3 150 or VIA?

I have got an ASUS K8V and it rocks. The VIA K8T800 is a solid chipset, but you have to tweak the memory settings if you are installing Win XP. XP is pretty fussy. After I got the timings right in the BIOS I have a solid system with SATA RAID that is the fastest system I have ever seen.

    AMD or Intel

It's not even close. The Athlon 64 will spank the Intel every time. My Athlon 64 3200+ runs rings around any Ineptel processor in Windows. Intel is cobbling together the P4 Extreme Edition to try to compete, but it is obvious that they haven't a player in this game.

I have an Athlon 64 3200+ with the stock OEM HSF. I run SETI continuously on this computer and the CPU temperature runs about 43-46 degrees C. The OEM HSF is not too bad.

    SCSI tape drive..

Mark FW900 is correct. Your problem is that the device is not terminated correctly. Each end of a SCSI chain must be properly terminated. Make sure that the external chain is not terminated in the SCSI BIOS, and then get a good hardware terminator for the external drive cable, or set the...

    Asus K8V (purchase planning)

I have just been through a week long hassle with this motherboard and memory. Not that there is anything wrong with the motherboard, but the BIOS is the worst. I spent hours trying to install Win XP Pro, only to have the installation fail (BSODs, or lockups) during the installation. I was...

    Athlon 64 heatsink/termal compound question

I bought a 3200+ and installed it on an MSI K8T Neo. The motherboard turned out to be dead, so I removed the 3200+ and cleaned the top of the chip and the bottom of the HSF with Goo Gone. After I removed most of the gunk I cleaned both with alchohol. I bought a new ASUS K8V and installed the...

Poll: Do you use Mouseware with your Logitech Mouse?

No, I don't use their Mouseware, nor do I use their drivers with the MX300. I bought an MX300 a couple of months ago and installed it on a Win2K system. When I would return to the system after it had been asleep for a while, the mouse pointer would ricochet around the screen and a number of...
