I too bought it from dell on boxing week (the 40gb model). Hopefully, it's not a bad batch from dell, how reliable is your information regarding bad lens during the Christmas surge? Btw, I believe Dell has a one or two month warranty.

Are CD-KEYS stored on the CD

As said, sometimes the cd keys are stored in the regestry...however, they may be encrypted. Depending on what program/game you're trying to get the cd key for, you may find a program that directly tells you what cd key is used.

What kind of sound card?

M-Audio Revolution 5.1 Sound Card. Great for music and movies. Good for gaming (but if your pc is strictly for gaming, get like an x-fi or audigy)

Installing new hard drive

This will probably sound stupid but would I need to format/partition the drive before copying the old HD to the new HD? I've never tried this before, usually i just do a fresh install on a new hard drive but this time I don't really have the time nor do I want to.

Sound card advice

I have the m-audio revolution 5.1, really good soundcard. Depending on what kind of music you have, I will try foobar or winamp and get ASIO for it (granted your current soundcard supports ASIO, m-audio does).

Anyone using Spy Sweeper?

Which version of spy sweeper are you using? If you're using the 5.XX versions, spy sweeper will always be running the background, you won't be able to end task it either. I'm still using V4.5.9, which is less memory intensive and doesn't cause as many problems.

It can handle oblivion at mid-high image setting at 1680x1050. I'm pretty sure it'll be able to play ut2k7 but probably only at mid image settings at 1680x1050

Creative sound cards are overrated especially the X-Fi...if you care about music/movie quality, you should try something like an M-Audio Revolution. The only thing the creative cards have are EAX.

Guess I'll help you out then...idle temperatures are pretty much useless (unless they are insanely high). I'd be more worried about the difference in temperatures between your two cores, they should be around ~5C degrees of each other. Test the temperature of your two cores while it is in...

how can i get the 64bit version of hl2 via steam ?

Steam automatically detects your OS and would use the correct 32 or 64 bit version. It has been supported for quite some time now (IIRC, it was released a while after 64bit windows xp was released).

Can't adjust speed of cpu fan with SpeedFan...

well...there isn't REALLY anything wrong with Q-fan...it's not really qfan's problem but my cpu would reach to 51C (fan on max), then drop to 50C (fan normal), then back up to 51C very quickly. I know i could just set it on to throttle at 54C but then the rpm might be a bit too low. BTW...
