I have the Zalman 7700 with the 120 mm fan myself on this board, no problem installing it at all with the provided backplate but definitely install the memory first, at least the first slot.
I had the exact same issue happen with mine, diagnostic code 29 on reboot after flashing with BIOS A03 downloaded from Jetway. I had to RMA the board and get a new one. Needless to say I did not flash to the new BIOS and am running version A02 that came with the board.
