Ivy Bridge Core i7 used in NEW Macbook Pro versus a PC deskotp or iMac?

I just realized in the review that the quad core turbo goes all the way up to 3+ GHz. I'm excited, actually. Now I will have superior performance in all my apps. They're taking their sweet time shipping this thing though :/

Portrait Orientation Wallaper?

Thanks, btw. I've been using itnerfacelift for years but then I rotated my monitor and I realized I had no wallpapers for it. Windows 7 makes it a pain in the ass to mix landscape/portrait monitors though.

How long has your computer lasted?

I also just realized that with the appropriate HDMI cable, you can plug it directly into a wall outlet since the power adapter is the same as the one that's used on the macbook/ipad chargers.

What was your first overclock?

I don't remember which was first. I had a 1GHz Coppermine that I did NOT overclock. The computer after that was an AMD athlon xp 2400+ that I did not overclock, and I replaced that with a 2800+ that I overclocked up to 2.08ghz, I think. But I think before I OCd my Barton I was overclocking...

Medfield phones look promising

That question became irrelevant about two years ago. Nobody cares anymore. Besides, windows 8 will run just as well on Tegra 3.

Makes it seem like intel needs to be at 32nm to build something that can compete with ARM at 45/40nm. Still impressive though. I just feel kind of... dirty... getting an x86 phone.

Benefits of Ivy Bridge for a laptop?

Ya, but you'll notice the difference more in laptops with smaller displays, where the CPU plays a bigger role in determining battery life.

AMD does not artificially cripple their CPUs. I mean, on an individual basis, yes, some of the quads are capable of running 6-cores, but they aren't worth the trouble to find from AMDs POV. Another example is the Phenom II X3, which, when it came out, were pretty much all just artificially...

Margins on CPUs

MC does not have 100% margins. That's insane. If it was that bad Intel would just sell them on their website. The margins are probably a lot higher on i7 CPUs for both Intel and MC, but the i5 at $180 is not going to be making them a lot of money at all. There's a reason why no other...

In-game observation (Battlefield 3)

I used to have this problem when I first started playing Call of Duty. I'd get shot out of nowhere (seemingly). It just takes practice. Minimap, audio, know your maps. Watch your back, stick with your squad, take corners with a scope and, if in doubt, throw a nade.

sometimes, but often not. I've had 3 crashes so far today. I know it didn't count in one of them because I never received my unlocks. It also tells me my total playtime on BTK is 17 minutes, which is slightly off.

I never heard of any of the games before, but I paid $2 for it just because. A lot of people who don't donate very much weren't likely to buy it anyway. If I think it's worth more later I'll just buy another copy ;)

Why overclock?

The original Phenoms are a great example of chips that just wouldn't clock up. Funny, Bulldozer has almost infinite headroom.

Why overclock?

It seems like we have a thread like this every couple of months. Answer: because you're willing to work for less than minimum wage and Intel engineers aren't. There is performance headroom in every CPU at a given TDP, but it is very time consuming to find it.

Conroe was not a major performance jump. Merom was only slightly faster than Yonah, no more than the difference between SB and Westmere. AMD have only themselves to blame. Anybody could see Conroe coming from a mile away. Banias was clock for clock competitive with AMD and running at a fraction...
