If it's a Maxtor drive, you have to use MaxBlast in order to allow windows to recognize it. I have not experienced this with my WD160gig but I have 6 or so partitions.

I suppose it could be a BIOS problem that you my need to update. It could also be an asusprobe problem. I don't think that such a big fluctuation is natural.
