How to upgrade a hard drive in place?

I was actually able to do this while Windows was running. Not sure how safe it was, but I took the old D, renamed it to an unused letter (e.g. Q), then renamed the new D to D and rebooted. It seems to be running OK, but I'm going to let it run a few days before I confirm I didn't lose anything...

Thanks, I was able to get the boot info moved by disconnecting all the drives except the SSD and using the Win7 disk to do Startup Repair. Now I need to get the profiles moved from one drive to the next. I'm hoping I can either change the drive letters while they're mounted or, if not...

I'm not moving to the new motherboard etc. I'm already there with the slower drive. I elected to wait on purchasing the faster hard drive when I upgraded, figuring I could easily image and transfer to a faster drive.

Dirt Cheap Athlon 64 OR Athlon XP Box?

I think I've found my twin. I too have a 700Mhz P3 Dell XPS and I'm planning on a very similar system (Sonata case, reuse an existing optical drive) only I'm going with the 9800Pro ($195 @ Newegg). Glad to see most posters agree that A64 is a nice long term choice.

I have $100 to buy a vid card. What to buy?

So, it looks like a ti4200 128MB and a non-pro Radeon 9600 are about the same price (see pricegrabber). Which would you choose? The ti4200 has the advantage of supporting AGP2x, so I could use it until I upgraded the rest of my rig.
