Help installing Win2k!!!

Have you tried removing all but one stick of memory as well??? The error you are getting is caused by a hardware/driver error, period. If you've pulled all unnecessary hardware and checked the rest for updated drivers and compatibility, it sounds like they may be a problem with the hardware.

win2k: instability where there used to be none

Uninstall and remove the scanner. See if the problem goes away. I've never seen a hard lock that wasn't a result of a hardware/driver issue.

Backup in XP?

If you don't want to use Offline Folders you can try PowerSync. There are free alternatives as well, but IMO PowerSync is one of the best file sync utilities out there. You'll also find it's much more powerful than briefcase ever was.

using .jpg's for wallpaper, is it ok on sys resouces in XP?

I think you're confusing resources and memory, and .jpg wallpaper with Active Desktop. Active Desktop is much more stable and system resources (not memory) are unlimited in XP. A .jpg background will typically use less memory than a .bmp background. The catch is to make sure Active Desktop...

Switching a server to dual cpu's on a Win2K machine what do I need to do?

I don't know of any specific issues but it wouldn't hurt to reinstall SP2, just to be safe. The change is pretty straight forward and took me about 5 minutes, includig boot-up time. You shouldn't have any problems as long as your system was running smoothly before the change.
