Hard disk Failure Testing

backup everything. clicking is a bad omen for hard drives, I have yet to have one that clicked not go bad. It could be off and on because of a loose component inside the drive that is sometimes ok, sometimes not. Backup as often as possible and find yourself a new drive for when yours...

Can a blackout reset a BIOS to defaults?

I have never heard of that happening. Of course that doesn't mean it can't, I think its unlikely tho. check the Asus site for known problems with the BIOS on that board and possibly updates?

If more things were written in assembly....

Maybe I missed this, but one simple line of C++ code is converted to about 5 lines of assembly code. the act of changing a variable several times is multiplied several times. The coding of programs in C++ or the like makes it easier and faster to code games and the like.

How do I save files to a floppy in linux?

if you don't have Gnome or KDE, do as volrath says. Of course, if the floppy is mounted already, you don't need to mount it first, but yeah he got it about right.

System restore problem

I'm not personally all that familiar with system restore, but It sounds like there is a file that has a location in it in the system restore bit and its not finding what it wants, where it wants it.

Have you reported it through the error reporting in windows? sometimes, you get a error website that has ways to fix it. Other than that, if it seems to be randomly restarting on a regular basis, meaning it does it at least once a day, you might have to do the old elimination game. Start...

newest drivers? USB? I've had problems with usb devices not being recognized, but have always been able to disconnect them from the computer and reconnect and they work fine afterwards. You also might want to try a full uninstall and reinstall in windows.

win xp crashed, can't do a repair install

I agree that it sounds like a failing hard drive. Usually this is checkable by using a boot disk with a dos prompt and running chkdsk. Most linux live discs will also give you access to the hard drive and allow you to backup anything that you may need onto a spare drive. good luck.

Basically, the reason that you need 15%fs for defragment is that windows needs the extra space to displace data that is being defragmented. Windows also complains when free space dwindles because it uses some of that space for virtual memory, which of course if the space is minimal for virtual...

My windows freeze if I press "ctrl-alt-del" then all unfreezes

next time it does it, and you press ctl-alt-del. bring up the task manager and leave it up till it freezes again. keep a close eye on the little green box it puts in the lower right hand corner. it will light up as you use up more resources. It really does sound like something is being slow...

My friend wants me to reformat his computer

Try linux. While it should be possible to to do what your asking(as noted in above posts) why not save yourself the time and effort and install linux and make the computer faster and more reliable?

Linux - which to learn on & is this O/S really free ?

I would suggest kubuntu as most noob's find the KDE desktop a little easier to learn. There are a few linux distributions that are charged for, but about 99.9% are free to download. Most linux distro's come with either firefox or konqueror which both work just fine for internet browsing...

Anyone else return to IE after using FF?

Why would I think of going back to IE? Darn thing crashes all the time, loads malware for me, and makes transparent png's look like burn patients. FF is the only one. Heck now that Uncle Bill implemented the Advantage thing on update, I can't even get IE to update my windows box.

I must say, Ubuntu (kubuntu version) is nice!

There's a reason that the kubuntu/ubuntu pair have been jumping up the popularity list. Ease of use is one of the main reasons. Glad you found a distro that works for you.

Will I lose installed programs if I upgrade from XP Home to Pro?

I am unaware of an upgrade from home to pro. If it's a actual ms upgrade then you should be fine, however if your planning on installing pro over home, I would expect to lose some. I don't know what files are the same, plus I would imagine the registry would be overwritten which could cause...

Help me, my xp pro cd broke

It is in fact perfectly legal to have in your possesion a backup copy of any software, given that you can show a valid and legal cd-key and license and you don't have it installed on more machines than you have licenses. I'd love to help you out, but the only iso I have is the xp pro corporate.

Why open source software will not appeal to "joe blow"

Places like schools and other organizations that are extremely price sensitive will eventually lead the OpenSource revolution. It's just a matter of the Microsoft and other companies raising their prices enough and the OpenSource Software becoming closer and closer to the Paid stuff.

for your "basic college functions" 2GB ram is a bit of an overkill. However if your planning on doing any serious gaming, it could be beneficial. There is a bottle neck in there somewhere with the ram and the bus and the cpu but with a 64 and a fairly good motherboard it should be negligible...

Just built my first PC

I would try a reinstall/repair install first but if that fails, the easiest way would be to format the hard drive and fresh install. Congrats on your first box tho. It took me about 3 days to get the first one to post. the darn Motherboard was grounding out. good luck,

Dell's with a coupon can't be beat for price and most of the higher end ones they sell are pretty good. Otherwise, alot of the others, you pay for the name on the case(alienware for instance).
