Multithreaded games are out now!

Quake 4 is not multithreaded. the new nvidia drivers however boost performance from X2 processors to FX-caliber or higher (X2 4800 > FX-57) i would imagine these drivers would do this in any game. so yes, with just these drivers, the X2 and other dual core chips are good enough for serious...

Athlon 64 FX-60 preview...

i dunno how much better the silicon could get...aren't the Opterons rigorously tested for 24-7 server environments? imho, you're paying almost 4 digits for the unlocked multiplier.

Any benchmarks out there that show dual core processors performing better in games?

btw those drivers are the reason i went for an Opteron 170 over a 14X series... i only play Quake 4 :)

yup they are. http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/7426/threads1ab.jpg <-- that is what it (81.85 driver) does. and it boosts X2 performance to about on par with the FX series in Quake 4... now if only Raven/id cared enough to make their engine multithreaded, which they apparently don't...

i have to ask...

anybody have dual opteron 800-series? for a total of 4 cores? :) are there any benchmarks? imagine if they had a mobo that had dual socket 940, and dual sli (quad video cards).

My Opteron 170 arrived

i am going this same route. good luck :) just ordered a OEM Opteron 170 from Monarch for $346 after a $10 off coupon. was panicking by the storm on the 165 and 140-series :( still need to sell off some parts on ebay, buy mobo/psu/vid card.

time to change PSU?

my system will have the following: dfi lanparty nf4 sli-dr mobo amd opteron s939 overclocked to at least 2.8ghz (hopefully staying under 1.5v) gf 7800gtx (only one) sb audigy2 zs gamer 1 dvd drive, 1 cd drive, 2 hard drives, and several fans. is my old Antec 480W power supply still...

alright i'm a n00b at oc-ing on the Athlon64 (:o) so i'm jumping straight from AthlonXP to hopefully a Opteron 939. i'll probably get a dfi nf4 motherboard (not sure which yet...when's the expert coming out for god's sake?). i have 1gb (2x512) of pc3700/ddr466 ram...its 2-3-2-5 timings...

most overclockable 754 board?

in that case i guess i will just keep hunting for good deals on 939 combos. how is the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe? can it overclock as well as the DFI Lanparty series? (using a 3700+ San Diego and probably an X2 4400+ sometime next spring). i would like to hit 2.6ghz or higher on both those.

here's my situation. i currently have an Athlon XP 3200+ and a Radeon X800 XT 256MB AGP card. the card rules. the cpu does not (particularly w/regards to Quake 4). my EVENTUAL system will be: some nice overclockable dfi 939 board with X2 4400+ oc-ed to hopefully 2.6ghz or better...

Quake 4 doesnt need more than 1 gig of RAM and 256MB of video memory

what Quake 4 needs is a patch to fix the lousy multiplayer code or at least enable mutithreaded processing to brute force its way through said lousy code. multiplayer will bring your system to its knees, no matter the specs, you will drop fps at inopportune moments which has other side...

guess i'll stick to my plan of getting a good new dfi mobo and overclocking an x2 4400+ to 2.6-2.8GHz, and using low latency DDR466 ram.

what're the multipliers for each? since they are the same core, do they both top out at 2.5-2.6GHz? has anyone managed to hit 2.8 on a 4800+ so if i'm planning on oc-ing to the max with air cooling, would the 4400+ be a better deal?

system stops powering up

this is really weird. i press the power button, and the lights on they keyboard flash, i hear the hdd click on, the cd drive's light comes on....nothing on the monitor. the cd drive's light again comes on....then goes off...then comes on...etc., no picture's displayed, system doesn't post...

AOE3 blue screen error

What can I do to improve my 3800 X2 OC?

isn't 238-240 fsb on a DDR400 motherboard kind of overkill without upping the chipset voltage? i'm not familiar with the new amd64 boards, how does the memory divider work and whats it do?

X2 game issue...Is it the same with ATI and NVIDIA?? How many problems are the P-Ds having???

btw, my friend installed the X2 driver, and it let C&C generals actually load. but then within minutes of entering a game, his computer just reboots. his memory timings are 2.5-3-3-8 and are exactly according to SPD.

really odd onboard nic problems

i transfer huge files like movies and game installs routinely...going 10x as fast would be worthwhile since i often spend half an hour to 60 minutes sitting copying files at a time.

my marvell gigabit onboard nic (Asus A7N8X-E) behaves strangely. i'll randomly get bouts of non-response from my network/internet. like if i alt+tab from Azureus (bittorrent client), then go back. all the transfer speeds reset to 0 and it reconnects after a few minutes. Internet Explorer also...

made it to 2.5ghz on my barton

true, i went back to stock video card speeds (500/500) whereas that test was at 520/540. i guess the video card helped boost the cpu test by half a frame a second on the first test (the balloon one). the other test is usually same fps everytime.

AMD challenges Intel to a dual duel

intel would say no in any scenario. you never accept to such a thing if the opponent is setting it up or volunteers the idea. if Tom's Hardware or CNET asked both other companies...then they might bite.

already got a swiftech mcx462v with AS5...i think its motherboard voltages that's holding me back. but i can't explain the difference in cpumarks in 3DMark05...at 2.36 i had 4000+ barely, then it dropped to 3700 at 2.4ghz...because there's 2 tests. one got better, the other got worse....

Athlon X2 vs. games :(

i also browse other forums using this possibly more valuable tool called google and i've seen everybody suggest the new X2 drivers from AMD's site for every game problem, and more than half of the time, it didn't stop the crashing or hanging for any of those people.
