Do you change your own oil?

For me, yes. When I'm finished I know the filter is tight, the oil plug is in properly and tight, and the oil level is correct. I also get a chance to look around underneath for potential problems.

    Hot water trouble

Sounds like the incoming cold line to the WH is blocked somehow. Opening the release should result in a good flow. If water flows well out of the release valve, then the issue lies in the hot water out line. How old is the unit and could it be leaking without you knowing it?

    Chlorine in drinking water

You don't want drinking water without some form of disinfection component. Ozonation is a good spot treatment but it does NOT protect a municipal distribution system. Want chlorine free drinking water? Put a glass jug of tap water in the fridge overnight. My opinion is....At this point there...

    Any microbiologists here?

I'm curious...corn syrup is a common food industry product. It is common to see rail cars full of the stuff in transit as well as tanker trucks for local delivery. Logically, contamination/spoilage concerns would have already been addressed by the industry. Either your application is unusual...

Why are there no instructions with all the plumbing stuff @ Lowe's, Home Depot, etc?

I applaud your willingness to attempt this! Most folks these days wouldn't even make an effort or know where to begin. However, a big part of DYI is understanding one's limits and having a feel for the project. Sometimes you need to admit that you don't have the skills or info to tackle a...

Is saying "Sir" and "Ma'am" polite or out of date?

I, like several others above, had Sir/Ma'am drilled into me from a very early age. I'm 58 and address most people that way UNLESS we are co-workers or close friends. To me it is polite speech part of cordial social interaction. Now, I can also, by tone, inflection, volume, etc. turn "Yes Sir"...

    Old folks upgrade advice

BoomerD, Good question! I'm one of those guys that changes his own oil, fixes the toilet, repairs the dishwasher, etc. Basically a tinkerer. Over the years I seen so much crappy attention to detail in OEM stuff that caused me troubles, I just figure I might as well screw it up myself. I've...

    Old folks upgrade advice

Thanks Torn Mind! I think my only real concern is that I get a motherboard that reliable. I've used Asrock before with no problems but there are so many choices and variations out there for socket 1155 that it makes my head spin. I appreciate you taking the time to reply. As for...

    Old folks upgrade advice

Currently, we have a full tower system AM2 dual core box with PATA HDDs, graphics card, CD & DVD burner etc. I built this several years ago with thoughts of gaming but never really got into it. Mostly we use this system to surf the web, keep in touch with kids and grandkids in far away places...

What happens when an employer won't grant FMLA?

The Family Medical Leave Act is quite complicated, however, an established ongoing medical condition can be covered by FMLA. PSU died/replaced. BIOS wont recongize SATA devices, now having bizarre power issues.

I would also check to see if the CPU heatsink has somehow become dislodged or mis-aligned. I have bumped the heatsink while re-routing cables and then experienced the on-off-on-off thing you seem to be having. Mobo was trying to protect from overheat.

YAGunT: .223/5.56 bullet tumbling vs fragmentation

Clearly! Every deer, bear, or boar I've ever shot had either (1) a wadded up hunk of lead or (2) numerous sharp shards of the bullet, inside. No evidence of "tumbling". I never knew the bullet cleverly wove it's way into just the right spot before transforming. And to think a little bullet...

YAGunT: .223/5.56 bullet tumbling vs fragmentation

Tumbling Bad! The lands and grooves in the gun barrel are designed to impart spin on the bullet specifically to eliminate tumbling. Maximim damage is created by the bullet either thru mushrooming or fragmenting. A tumbling bullet is very inaccurate...worse than mini-ball ammno and smooth bore...

    Home owners: preventative pipe maintenance?

I advise the following on a monthly basis for the kitchen sink: Fill (to the top) the sink with HOT water, add one cup household bleach, pull the stopper. The hot water loosens any built-up grease while the bleach cleans and sanitizes. You can do this in bathroom sinks every so often to help...

    Training for hiking

Prior to hiking the Grand Canyon, our hiking club practiced at the local football stadium. We walked up and down the steps, the bleachers themselves, across gaps, along the seats(simulating a narrow trail), sidestepping, backing and turning. Everything was done at a nice comfortable, safe pace...

federal employees make more for the same job than private

Infohawk, "Senior Environmental Chemist" best describes my current position so , according to your info, my average salary should be 96K. Add to that a customer base of 300,000 people and I'd say my position might be considered slightly above average. Additionally, a merit based salary system...

federal employees make more for the same job than private

Personally, I would love to see government salaries/benefits adjusted to match private industry. As a chemist responsible for water quality in a large city, my 60K is about half of comparable private workers with the same level of responsibility. The benefits help make up the difference. I did a...

Panel recommends Americans drink more waste water to combat future shortages

News Flash...there is no new water on Planet Earth. It's all been "recycled" , some of it millions of times. People don't think badly of milk but think about how it is produced. And then there is beer, a product of yeast metabolism. Need I list more?

Is it regular practice for a car shop to refuse CEL diagnostics you got elsewhere?

Well ok maybe I HAVE overlooked something. Please explain why the banks/CC companies have decided to be so generous as to send you that 1% to 5% you get and how they can afford to do so. I think they realize that for every person who is able to keep the balls in the air they will have...

Which cards to eliminate/lower limit to improve my score? (long-term goal: mortgage)

Stop and think why the bank doesn't care about your net worth or assets or savings.....they want you on the hook. They can use their self-serving FICO score to determine how much tthey will make off of you. Interestingly, if you have a low FICO but a $100,000 in the bank, you will pay a high...

Perpetual motion not possible ?. Answer this!.

Places on Earth becoming Un-inhabitable as man heats up planet

As a biologist, I'm not a bit worried. The laws of nature will kick in (if they haven't started already) and the human population will crash. The ecosystem that is planet earth will re-balance itself and life will go on. Yet to be determined if the human race will be a part of it. Humans are...
