Dell: Exploding batteries are Sony's fault

The batteries are the fault of whichever company was responsible for quality control on the batteries. This would have been outlined in the contract between the two companies, and as such is unknowable to us. For the record, I don't buy either sony or dell products. Not liked either for years.

    changing permissions in winxp

It's funny, I've been using linux for less than a year now, but it just seems that I like poking around and exploring the it's features much more than with windows. The only thing I miss about my windows install is the ability to try to break (and then fix) my machine the same way my friends...

    changing permissions in winxp

Topic summary really says it all. I was helping a friend with their computer, trying to manually uninstall a piece of software (following the manufacturer's instructions) and received a permissions error. This was after booting into safe mode, which I thought was analagous to single-user mode...

    Sin Taxes

I don't know how it is where you are, but up here in Canada, it is usually the conservative governments that raise the "sin" taxes. They did it under Mulroney, and they did it again recently under Harper. It's the only tax conservatives can raise without alienating their core constituencies.

    ATI / Linux?

The major reason many distros don't ship proprietary software is not that it violates ati's EULA, but that it does not allow them to licence their distro under the GNU GPL. Not to get too off topic, I have ati's latest drivers installed and running fine under ubuntu, with a 9800 pro. This...

Richard Cohen-- Israel is a mistake

I sort of think he's right. Israel is a nation under attack from a group that hates its very existence. Every forceful action Israel takes causes more civilian casualties, and creates more popular support for the Hamas and Hezbollah. The situation over there may only leave two options...

organized religion as the root of all evil

Sorry pal, Nothing happening in the middle east comes close to the evils of the two world wars, or the slaughters that arose in the USSR, China and Cambodia. And those had more to do with political ideologies like nationalism or statism than anything else. Also, as you point out...

Windows 2000 vs. XP vs. 2003

The first time I read a link19 thread I thought it was some kind of bizarre, but fundamentally brilliant, webforum performance piece. Now that I see how some people are reacting to him, I think he might just be doing a masters thesis in online sociology.

Is Linux Rolling Over In Its Grave?

What exactly are you looking for in a desktop? If all you're looking for is a simple, clean looking gui, then Gnome may work for you. It's installed by default with Ubuntu. It is very easy to configure, and ubuntu is a good learning distro. The support community is fantastic. If you are...

Is Linux Rolling Over In Its Grave?

What exactly are you looking for in a desktop? If you are looking for speed, Xubuntu is ubuntu with the xfce desktop environment; faster and leaner than Gnome. If all you're looking for is a simple, clean looking gui, then gnome may work for you.

    Linux PVR

Take a look at this anandtech article. Any distro will do, I'm not familiar with there being any distro built for it. Only thing that would likely make you choose one distro over another is your selection of video card.

    Linux Plung

Making money on the moon seen key to exploration

A space elevator would by much less expensive on the moon than on earth. It could be 1/3 the length due to the moon's weaker gravitational pull, and it could be weaker since there would be no weather to worry about (and fewer human/natural consequences if it came down). Also, fuel and...
