Oblivion, X1900 XT, and 1680 by 1050 widescreen gaming

As the title suggests, are any of you getting smooth frame rates in Oblivion with such a setup? Thinking of moving to a widescreen 20 incher soon.

How much voltage and heat can Opteron Processors handle?

No one can really tell you what the maximum limits are except the engineers over at AMD. From my experience as a chip designer though, engineers usually give a 0.2V leeway for their CMOS technologies. That gives you a maximum of 1.6V Vcore before breakdown voltage occurs.

X2 3800+ retail or Opteron 165 OEM for same price ($322)

At stock speeds, no way is the 165 better than the X2 3800.The extra 200MHz of the 3800 beats an extra 512kb of cache everytime.

X2 3800+ retail or Opteron 165 OEM for same price ($322)

I vote for the X2 3800 since it has a 10x multiplier. The Opteron 165 only has a 9X multiplier. Which means you're basically limited to about 2.7GHz on most quality motherboards.

Are the s939 A64's still a good buy?

If you're not overclocking, get the X2 3800 then. Best bang for the buck. If you can get a 170 Opteron for a similar price, get that instead.

    Dangers of Overclocking

If your HDD is corrupted, then maybe you placed your SATAs on the wrong ports? Remember, ports 1 and 2 are generally not locked on nForce4 mobos, so place the HDD on ports 3 or 4. Besides, the nVidia controllers are better performers than the SiS ones, IIRC.

Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Dual Core or AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego or Neither?

Get the fastest dual core processor within your budget. Personally, I think the 2x512Kb L2 cache versions are in general better overclockers than their 2x1Mb counterparts, since there is less strain on the memory controllers. But since you're only doing 'a little' overclocking, take the 2x1Mb...

What means TRULY stable? SuperPI, Prime95.....

From my experience, Prime stable is not necessarily system stable. For example, I could run two instances of prime on my system for 8 hours, but the system can have a BSOD at any time when I don't stress it. It seems that when running the CPU at 100%, it is stable, but not when it is idle. Weird.

Opteron Dual Core: Voltage and Temps, limits of...

I do some circuit design on CMOS processes. I don't know what the limitations of AMD's 0.09u SOI process is, but from my experience, they normally have a 0.2V leeway for the breakdown voltage. For example, for a certain 0.25u process, the breakdown voltage is 2.5V, but 2.7V is the absolute...

any dual core opterons done this yet?

Very impressive dude. Although I wouldn't want to pay that much for 3GHz. I'll just wait until 3GHz is the slowest performing AMD chip and buy it then. :)

Stable in XP32 but not in XP64?

It's rock stable at stock voltages. Since it was more stable when I increased the Vcore, I can only come to the conclusion that 64 bit processing requires more Vcore.

Stable in XP32 but not in XP64?

I've tried everything from integrating WHQL RAID drivers to decreasing RAM speed, but the only way I could get total stability was by increasing the Vcore a little bit. So there you go, guys. Being prime stable in XP32 doesn't mean it's stable in XP64. Take it for what it's worth. Now I have to...

Stable in XP32 but not in XP64?

I think one of the possible reasons for the BSOD is that I am using Raid 0. Although I didn't have any issues during the installation and immediately after, many have got BSODs just like mine. Will try the 6.67 drivers during installation just in case. Will update later.

Stable in XP32 but not in XP64?

Biostud, you're just unlucky to get that CPU. My 3800 does 2.6GHz at 1.39V. Although as you can see, it's not stable in XP 64.

Stable in XP32 but not in XP64?

It wasn't even full. I was running WMP when suddenly it gave a BSOD and rebooted. Yes, my X2 is overclocked to 2.6GHz. From my experience, BSODs generally happen when the CPU is idle, not when it is at load. So I think there's more to 64-bit operation than I know of. Edit: I reread your post...

Stable in XP32 but not in XP64?

Just wanted you guys to know that I just found out that my X2 3800 is stable with dual prime for 12 hours in Windows XP 32-bit, but not stable at all in Windows XP 64. So there's one reason why AMD overvolts by a lot, I guess. Maybe the 64-bit part of the CPU needs more voltage than 32 bit?

    Corsair Value Ram...

Sparka, the Corsair Value RAM can be overclocked, but not out of the box. when I first got my 2X1Gb Value Selects, I couldn't go above 205MHz. But after burning in the RAM using Prime95 at 200MHz for a few days, I find that I can go to about 234MHz at higher timings. You can even burn in at...

I've got a Manchester, and it's running at 2.7GHz at 1.47V. Dual Prime95 stable for at least 7 hours. Logically, I would think a Toledo in general would overclock better since it has more surface area than a Manchester, but with the same power consumption. But of course, other factors...

    help with overclocking 3800+

From my experience, running small FFTs seem to last longer than when running large FFTs. So it's better to use large FFTs (and utilize most of your RAM) to test for stability. Make sure your Vcore is not higher than 1.45V, and Vdimm should not be higher than 2.7V. Unless of course, you wanna...

It's not just the motherboard, I suppose. You've also got to take into account the fluctuations of the PSU. Besides, motherboard voltage readings can be misleading, thus you need to measure the voltage with a multimeter. The best that we can do right now is to blame the temp readings of the...
