Intelligent, well thought out answers are so rare in forums. Kudos to you!

Anyone have a Microsoft Surface Book?

Looks like you did the right thing. I've had 2 SB (first one got replaced because the screen digitizer had issues) and neither had that problem.

    MacBook or Surface Pro

Sounds like you've lived in a PC ecosystem. I'd stick with the Surface Pro because of that. Not sure you'll take advantage of the portability/flexibility it offers, so if switching from Windows to MacOS is fine for you, then it's a wash. Both are going to struggle a little when it comes to...

    Over-ear passive noise cancelling headphones

That's true with any passive noise canceling as well. Earmuffs are just like pressing your hands to your ears...

    Over-ear passive noise cancelling headphones

You could always just buy some ear muffs/protectors from a hardware store to use with your earbuds. Looks ghetto if you're walking around outside like that...but if you're just sitting at home...

I'm buying a nice TV, dammit

Probably going to want blackout blinds for those little windows to get the most out of the OLED.

I'm buying a nice TV, dammit

Best sales for TV's are actually right before the Super Bowl and a little after while new models are being rolled out. You could always head to the store and see whether the 900E is worth it over the 850E. I'd say yes for the added clarity, but that's just me. OLED is clearly still the best...

    Best HDMI Switch? (4K/60 4:4:4)

https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=101&cp_id=10113&cs_id=1011310&p_id=24179&seq=1&format=2 With HDMI it either works or it doesn't. There's no "EXCELLENT" other than longevity. My Monoprice switch didn't break for the 2 years I used it...but I'm not as sure about others.

    are there 4k 120hz projectors?

The only true 4k home projectors are made by Sony. None of them do it. Not sure about the $50k+ professional market though.

Recommend speakers to cover 4000sf shop area?

Just get a used receiver from somewhere. I'd go pre-HDMI unless they plan on using digital sources.

Looking at these 2 TV's, help me pick one please.

VA Panels in high end TV's are usually fine in color reproduction. The bigger issue is viewing angles. VA isn't as good if viewed off angle...but the blacks and motion tend to be better.

Recommend speakers to cover 4000sf shop area?

Ceiling mounting would waste a lot of sound. Suggest wall mounting. I'm guessing this isn't for concerts but just even sound throughout the room? I'd go for more speakers so half the room isn't deaf while the other half can't hear a thing. That's such a large area you'd probably need more...

    Surface Laptop

Yeah, I wondered about that too. I'm guessing the cloth/keyboard wouldn't work with a 360 hinge...would get nasty resting on a table. Keyboard would have to be inset too, which would probably make it fatter overall. Surface Pro is still best for going from pen/traditional use anyway.

    Surface Laptop

It's a good buy for those people in your life that need a laptop that can "do everything" but you don't want to be "IT guy" for. IE: Relatives. Also: Kids who attract computer viruses as easily as they do normal viruses. For professionals they can upgrade to Win10. Personally, I'll stick...

    Building a sub-$1000 family PC - i5 or Ryzen1600?

6 core 12 thread vs. 4 core 4 thread? No brainer: 1600. Even taking games into account: that 1050 will be maxed out by either CPU so it doesn't matter. Only moving to a 1080 or beyond does the CPU start limiting the GPU. By the time you move up to a higher end graphics card the games will...

Is it normal to have vocals just be completely unintelligible?

There are articles about this. In ear phones always give up a little in vocals due to the way they bypass your pinna. Being closed also limits the soundstage. Of course you get massive convenience using earbuds. Just the nature of the sound. I prefer the sound of open headphones...but I...

Hard to say. Displayport is always more robust than HDMI anyway. I'd always go to displayport if I could.

Skylake 4K to Kabylake 4k - comparison - more power or more efficiency?

Correct me if I'm wrong here (I haven't really been paying attention) but isn't Kabylake or newer required for some 4k DRM?
  21. G

    Display flickering in 4K

960 only supports HDMI 2.0. I don't think it can handle that bandwidth no matter the cable. I'd switch to displayport.

Need to make good use of my Logitech PC surround sound setup?

TV doesn't have 6 channel preouts. Z506 can't interpret optical or HDMI input. So you'd need something to split the signal as well as do digital->analog conversion. Doable, but not on the cheap and not worth it given the quality of the speakers. Heck, it'd cost more than buying a new set.

Anyone here a swinger? (Swing arm wall-mounted TV, that is...)

I have a plasma mounted to the wall using a Monoprice arm. It's completely stable. As long as you can properly locate two studs you'll be fine.

    Screen Cleaning

The cleaner people use for glasses. Costco gives free refills if you buy it from them. Isopropyl alcohol is still quite good, but it depends on the coating used for the TV. Isopropyl could dissolve it. What type of TV is it? What's on the surface of it?

Should I get a new desktop for video editing?

Well, it seems pretty clear that for your use case a Ryzen 1700 would be a good bet. I'd go there. General hardware will have builds if you want to ask there. I'm not up on the new chipset/processor yet. There's still a little bit of shakeout coming with motherboards.

    Bedroom set up.

RP Series. I wouldn't get a center channel that only goes down to 82Hz. I wouldn't get a Klipsch sub. There are just too many better values out there.

15 inch, high resolution, thin-and-light laptops without a 10-key numpad?

The best laptops are down in the 13-14" range. I'd say the Razer Blade, but that's 14". After touching the Macbook Pro...I can't imagine anyone choosing that keyboard. It's crap.
  29. G

Should I get a new desktop for video editing?

A $1000 processor will likely get equaled/beaten by a $500 processor. AMD Motherboards will likely be cheaper too. I'd say it's possible to save between $300-600. Intel may respond with a price drop, too. Intel CPU's from 2 years ago are about as fast as Intel processors of today...

Should I get a new desktop for video editing?

Ryzen comes out in in less than 2 weeks. Prices are going to change pretty dramatically right after. Getting an 8 core/16 thread for the price of a 4 core/8 thread is going to be massive.

    High Dynamic Range (HDR) [TFTCentral]

I hear you on the color accuracy for prints. As a non-photographer gamer, though, I just want better contrast/colors @ >90 Hz. I would expect color accuracy to improve dramatically for OLED once it penetrates the PC market. The high end who will pay for it will demand it. I'm sure there are...

    High Dynamic Range (HDR) [TFTCentral]

The great hope is that 4k OLED screens have begun coming out on laptops. I'd really love to see a 32" 4K OLED with HDR. Ultimately, though, the premium PC display market is being dominated by 144Hz+ monitors. I mean, the holy grail would be a 4k HDR 144Hz OLED monitor...but that doesn't...

Should I get a new desktop for video editing?

I agree. When computing needs are really modest, the value proposition isn't as big for building it yourself. My father kept debating whether he wanted to do a lot of video editing. I told him I could easily put together a computer suitable for that, but it would cost a lot more. He ended up...

Should I get a new desktop for video editing?

Pay an extra $500 for a $1k computer, amortized over 5 years, is $100/year. Think about how many days you'll save over that time. Seems like it's worth it to get a decent computer.
  35. G

Should I get a new desktop for video editing?

I'd say yes. Wait a little bit for Zen to come out. That should bring prices down a bit.

Heavy workload office tablet that supports keyboard, hand written signatures.

Did you handle the Surface Pro 4 cover or one of the previous ones? The Pro4 cover is head and shoulders above the others.

Heavy workload office tablet that supports keyboard, hand written signatures.

You're wrong about the Surface Pro 4's keyboard. It's quite good. The biggest negative about the SPro 4 is the battery life. The second biggest is the lack of USB Type C. Pro 5 should be out anytime now. As for being indestructible...that'd be a Panasonic Toughbook. Barring that a...

Creative Sound Blaster X7 & XM7 bass problem

Full range, make sure you have no subwoofer enabled. Maybe you just expected too much? Bookshelves, even good ones, can't equal an actual subwoofer. An excellent bookshelf goes down to about 48 Hz, whereas a small sub will hit 25 and a larger one below 20 Hz.

Will a better Microphone be Louder? Suggestions?

A good microphone will sound better and be louder. In general a desktop mic will sound better than a headset mic. There are good clip on mic's that use bluetooth, but they aren't cheap.
