Can't install Win XP, bluescreen during installation

acpi causes headaches too, try switching modes or doing a bios update. You might even have to just use apm and forget acpi features.

How do you open the case of a sony VAIO pcv-7772?

on my old sony there was a little tab by the top of the power supply (on the back of the case). If you pulled this little tab out of the case further the side would pop off. Believe you me, there are MUCH worse cases than sony's, i repaired a pc for a weird hp model one time that took me 2 hours...

What does virtualization mean to me?

Really, VT allows you to run the KVM kernel modules. This allows virtualization on the fly between OS's without modding any OS. It take a perf loss, but thats ok i guess if your xp speed is comparable to half of your c2d speed, its still good enough for webdev stuff:) Xen is still faster than...

What must I do to transfer 1 drive completely to another

partition magic can't copy your current root drive succesfully. You need a 3 or 4 gig drive with win 2k and PM installed on it, then copy the drives around with total install+expand. I still find windows fails to boot sometimes when you use partition magic. It's sketchy at best and I'll have...

Value of hard drive rpm

o and to add to the whole 10000rpm thing: higher rpm is better, but only marginally. 7200rpm is decent for desktop use and most users won't even notice the difference. Enough home PC's have raid 0,1,0+1/10 so they could use two 7200rpm in a striping setup and achieve more performace (and space)...

Value of hard drive rpm

SATA is really nothing more than pata with a few new buzz words (ncq?!) and a smaller wire. It an improvement but is certainly isnt an u320 raid5 controller. Sas is basically the same as sata is to pata. It makes the wire smaller ;) I just wish there were more SAS controllers for pci-e x1 slots...

it spreads viruses more than anything else, and if some1 is talking on irc @ work its good to know who is talking where. If you ask me what I personally think of irc as a protocal on the whole, you will never hear the end of it :)

Remarkable slower WinXP boot up with new Raptor

haha wow malware :) always slows stuf down. Did you install the intel application accelerator? It really doesn't boost anything much, but it is the official chipset drive/perf package.

P3 server Performance

upgrade to opteron, dual opty. If your movies are fine and mail server is slow that is an indicator that IO is fine (if the movies never get choppy) and CPU power is lacking. Maybe you have to reprioritize your system to give webserver more cputime.

How can i use a SCSI hard drive?

u need the right kind. scsi has 50pin ribbons much like pata, 68 pin ones that are narrower and much denser and 80 pin which is like a slot thing and 80 pin drives have no molex power connector, power is in the scsi connector for them. 50 pin controllers are like 50c, 68 ping 40mb controllers...

no meng, ram in linux is supposed to be full. Just because your little status monitor or /sbin/free or w/e it is tells you its all used up doesn't mean there isn't room, it moves stuff out on the fly too. If your not using 100% of your ram, you should have saved your money, or you should have...

uh well the both have simliar gui package tools. I think the fc6 default repository may be better. I find dependencies in both to be sketchy and I'm not a fan of binary packages. If your doing a business server with multiple server guys I'm assuming your business is beyond both of these...

Are you saying ipod nano's have a limited amount of times you can erase and refil the memory? I've never heard of such a thing, I've seen people use usb flash drives for upwards of 5 years. I guess this isnt the same as running postgres with 1200 transaction a second on an ssd though.

About RAID1 hardware selection and recovery

raid 10 would be best option for his mobo supported modes, but the mtbf of a raptor is about 114 years estimate. Thats like an order of magnitude better than seagate standard drives. If you want better performance though, raid 10 with 4x 320gb gives you more speed and space. I'm assuming power...
