Oh, yeah: shutdown. You can set these things with their included software to shut your system(s) down as quickly or gently as you like.

Can you guys tell me about UPSs?

I bought a "CyberPower" brand UPS at Costco last year for $89.99. I thought of it as high end surge protector. It was supposed to provide 30 min of computer backup time. Four days ago the city power went out at the pole outside our house. It took almost 3 hours for the city to fix. I didn't...

    Silver vs. Copper

I think this analogy makes sense. It reminds me of the rationale for RDRAM. Measuring thermal conductivity MUST be less than straightforward, else there wouldn't such differences in reported values. I've seen some reported of about 18%. Maybe not everything on the Internet is entirely...

    Hot Kabini quad-core mini-ITX CPU / mobo / case combo $100 @ Newegg

If one were to assemble this combo "minimalist style," with no graphics card and just a small SSD, what would be the physically smallest (and lowest wattage) power supply you could use?

I didn't know that about heat pipes. What do they contain as a vapor-phase medium?

    Which monitor for ~$400?

One 7850 on a non-overclocked pre-Sandy @ 3.2. 1080p is fine for my modest use, though I will upgrade everything else during the summer.

If I've got up to $400 for a monitor, which one should I buy? I'd really appreciate guidance on this.

    Many questions about batteries.

I don't know the chemistry of "memory effect." The battery's voltage is determined by the chemicals involved. "Hotter" components make higher voltages. Most common batteries are 1.5 volts. There is more "chemical stuff" in the bigger ones, so they can maintain the same voltage output longer or...

    Help me unfatify myself

I would like to be delicate about this . . . "Posts: 19,078" implies a significant--though admirable--degree of online involvement reflecting sedentary habits contributing to suboptimal success in OP's achievement of defatification. Maybe a high-effort keyboard or a mouse that's...

    Silver vs. Copper

I'm afraid Blain is right. Still fun to think about. Still, it looks more like it's been talked to death rather than tried so much. And a lot of the talk is questionably informed despite impressively authoritative attitude. Please try not to double post... go back and edit original post...

    flash drive

I've had that happen a number of times. Some flash drives are prone to it--especially when they are getting ready to die. Sometimes "auto play" settings are the cause. Some security programs change them. Doing what corkyg said is important.

Why only 32GB Max RAM on modern computers.

To answer OP's initial question, typically it's been a combination of OS and hardware imposing RAM (as well as hard drive size) limitations. Different versions of Windows 7 are capable of addressing different amounts of memory. The hardware obviously has to allow for it as well. Motherboard...

Where do I plug in these fan cables?

A lot of people used to think it was better not to "burden" the poor motherboard with such simple things as fans. They used to just plug them directly into the power supply with one or the other spare connectors. Obviously, fans always ran fast and loud.

    (How) Do divining rods work?

A local prospecting store sells these things alongside legitimate prospecting equipment. I can't help but think that if they worked REALLY well, the shop owners wouldn't have to mess around running a small shop. Wouldn't they just take their sticks and go find the motherlode?

    Silver vs. Copper

BonzaiDuck summarizes the relevant issues very well. It's interesting to me that thermal conductivity data are variously reported. One credible source cites an Ag-Cu difference as almost 20%, while another (probably more credible) source cites only about 5%. Definitely confusing. I also...

    Silver vs. Copper

Silver's thermal (and electrical) conductivity is the highest of all metallic elements--roughly 20% better than copper. I didn't know there were ever silver water blocks--it would be fascinating to play with one. Plating wouldn't be near the advantage of solid silver, and it wouldn't really...

    Silver vs. Copper

Thank you for the response. Another way of phrasing my question: did silver, superior physical properties notwithstanding, ever show more than miniscule benefit as a heatsink component? Market review would imply that it didn't. I suppose that the limitation may have been transmission of heat...
