I recently got a 5770 card. I have 10.3 drivers installed and it seems to me that I am getting a real performance issue with OpenGL.
I run a legacy game (VQuake, yeah I know lol and all that) which is of course OpenGL based. Never had performance issues with my 8800GTS but now I get major...
jnjboc,
I run 8GB of RAM and mine is also a gaming rig. Depending on the game your RAM will be used as the games use RAM to read in textures, maps etc.
4GB is also cool. You won't be memory starved like in XP.
HTH
Windows 7 was released because Vista was sooooo bad that it compared unfavourably to ME.
It should be buried as the heap of garbage it was.
Just my opinion...
If you move the backup out of the WindowsImageBackup folder you can have as many as you like. Rename the moved folder into a folder with a date or version number (e.g. noapps20100211) and (wallah) you can have plenty of backups.
HTH
Team,
I had a legit version of Ultimate.
That's right, strictly legit.
I flashed my BIOS due to a memory incompatibility problem and then - no more activation.
:-(
WTF
What is M$ doing in my BIOS???
Anyhoo, I reported this as a bug on the M$ form and was told that this doesn't...
How annoying is it when you have set up your machine, try to do a backup and it tells you that the backup will include your data drive (filled with > 2tb of "evaluation" stuff) and you can't deselect it?
Well, very annoying.
Two solutions:
1. Use the command line:
WBADMIN START BACKUP...
Here we go (again):
Issue:
You see ?Unidentified local access only? message under Vista.
Supposed fix:
Microsoft says to put a registry fix in to address the issue. This doesn?t work. You start tearing your hair out (if you have any left...)
Everyone is blaming Microsoft.
But guess...
ColKurtz,
I have some experience in scripting in a test environment using automatic tools.
We had a similar issue a while back so we scripted a maximise screen function into each script. This means that when a screen is called up the first step was to maximise it. Then, when the cursor is...
Vista uses a superior memory management technique to XP (as well as other OS's).
I'm in agreement with Pabster in that memory menagement is the best part of Vista IMO.
I run 2GB of RAM and usage varies quite a bit, from 780-1.25 GB which I consider to be the normal usage pattern for Vista...
Sorry to put it like this but....
I am ASSuming that it is a serious question and that you are not having a bit of fun at our expense, so to speak.
If it is serious then I apologise profusely.
Windows ME lasted about 45 minutes in our home. I was running 3 PC's. I brought home a copy of...
Yeah, interesting allright!
I got caught. I have a valid (That's right, store bought) copy of Vista Ultimate.
I purchased a new video card which required a BIOS flash for performance and stability reasons.
Flash, bang, dead....
My previously fully activated Vista was now...
I defrag automatically daily as I churn a number of files (NOT ALL OF THEM TORRENTS!)
I have never had an issue with any of the torrents. The only effect is that the defrag takes longer.
Team,
I support PC's for a living.
I have found only two things which break XP:
1. Too many installed apps
and
2. The official hotfix updates.
There is no reliable way to uninstall these hotfixes. Hotfixes are not tested in the same way service packs are.
They address specific...
Yes, a DOS computer can use FTP. There are still some old utils out there. I have an old DOS TCP/IP boot disk which I pick up from Bart's Bootdisks
Really old skool though...
Don't ask me for any details though coz I'm so old and senile.....

I don't agree with bsobel (sorry!).
It is easy to think that the limit of 10 is 10 PC's. Not true. It is 10 connections. In other words if one PC opens 2 files you only have 8 connections left. 64 bit won't help you there.
There is a bad hack floating around which CLAIMS to lift this...
I have an 8800. Prior to that I ran a 7800GTX and ran into a similar startup problem. It was the nVidia driver.
I updated the driver and all was well. It was a bit puzzzling for a while though...

For general home use Home is just fine.
having said that I wouldn't be caught dead personally running Home, only Pro for various reasons such as better networking support.
Performance wise I have never seen any differences between the two.
HTH
PS
I wish I were running XP Pro again...
Apart from driver issues it is good practice to do a fresh install on a new machine.
I also do a image afterwards so that I can recover without having to do a complete install.
HTH
Kamazon,
I feel your pain.
If the reg size is set to 512 then there's not much else to be done IMO.
It is true that > 100MB it starts to strugggle a bit but in my (modest) experience I haven't seen it cause too many problems, certainly nothing like what you are reporting.
If it were my...
I seem to remember that there is a way to extract info from NW (that nasty old beast). but it was so long ago (and I'm sooo senile) that I can't remember.
I think it was an option in NT 4.0...
So old.....
HTH
Kamazon,
In Win2K there is a way of restricting (and increasing) the size of the registry.
They removed this in XP and Win2K3 because it is handled automatically.
Go to My Computer, Properties and then Advanced.
Sorry, don't have a screenshot for you as I don't run it anymore.
HTH
VirtualLarry,
You will find that Vista memory and handle management are superior to XP.
Having said that and reading through the issues in this post I believe you will probably come across the same issue sooner or later due to buggy apps, not XP or Vista restrictions.
Not much help, just...
Arkaign,
Welcome to the wonderful world of Steve Ballmer!
All jokes aside:
1. Adobe Acrobat: This product (V8) will only install correctly with UAC turned on as documented in the Adobe forums.
This is Adobe's fault for not using a standard installation program.
2. Not all directories...
JiveCoolie,
At the risk of sounding contentious (which is why forums exist IMO) there are a number of reasons why people (including myself) don't like Vista.
1. Vista is unpredictable. One behaviour one day, different behaviour the next. This includes items like not being able to set...
I use Vista Ultimate with Daemon Tools daemon4091-x86.
Works fine. The only thing I don't like about it is that it stops PerfectDisk from running an offline defrag unless you boot into safe mode.
Oh well.
HTH
There are always 2 instances of Explorer running.
One of them is your desktop. The other one is the visible Windows Explorer.
It is not a virus. If you want to know which is which, the instance which has more memory associated with it (after some use) is the visible user interface.
HTH
I have the same issue since last week. I have not installed a new media player (like VLC) so I don't know what the issue is.
This only occurs in IE7. Outside, using Windows Explorer, no issues.
WTF
:)
All,
I have this faaabulous MB and video cards (A8n32-SLI Deluxe with two 7899GTX's) but I was having a problem when BM that it shut down under stress (Doom 3, FEAR etc).
This was repeatable (i.e. always on the same frame).
I have rebuilt the box (not quite happy with it because it's...
My experience:
Config:
A8N32 (obviously)
Opteron 175
2 x 1 GB Geil
Antek Case
Antek PSU (3 different types)
7800 GT (then dual 6600 BFG OC)
My other system see sig.
This thing won't post. Changed everything including 3 powesupplies. RMA'd the board, got new board, same thing. The...
Dude,
I had a couple of Ali mobos and they were "relatively" stable.
But let me say this:
They burnt the pants off the other motherboards with the same speed chips in them.
You could do worse.
I would certainly use later chipset drivers than the ones that ship with the mobos though.
There are issues with larger HDD on these old (but reliable) mobos.
Add-in card and SATA (not SATA II because of different PSU plugs unless you want to change the PSU as well).
HTH
sjfphoto,
Sorry, didn't make myself clear. I meant stay away from RAID 5. RAID 0 is very good but no redundancy. My RAID 5 speed tests (such as they were) it took > 8 hours to format 973 Gb (4 x 250 Gb array) and transfer times of "evaluation" content was at about 13% of RAID 0.
All,
Thought I would share my XP regarding this mobo.
I changed from an A8N-SLI Premium to the A8N32.
First off the good news:
Pretthy easy to install. Stable with 10% OC on FSB. Relatively low heat for mobo and CPU. Great performance. I was able to transfer my Sil RAID set to the...
