Windows RAID5 vs. Solaris ZFS/RAIDZ

Still, the gains from ZFS are so freakin' attractive though. If someone made a Windows ZFS driver, I'd be in heaven. Guess I better start learning C or something. Or I suppose I could be a tool and buy an XServe when Snow Leopard comes out.

I wonder how well it would work if you ran Windows Server 2003, running VMWare or VirtualBox, and ran whatever flavor of Solaris in a VM, but connected it directly to your hard drives. I've been thinking of trying this for a while, but don't know how crazy it sounds, or if it's even possible...

It's not my choice. They tell me to code it like this; I do it so I can get a paycheck. Besides, our remote sites have their own budgets, so they use 6 or 7 year old computers to save money. That's mainly what this sort of thing is for. Anyway, would you run Office 2007 on anything less? :P

Anyone running Tomato know why the IP addresses handed out aren't sequential? I guess it really doesn't matter that much, but even between router reboots, each of the MAC addresses on my network continue to get the same IP addresses.

What are you guys doing with your quads?

RMA-ing it, because I think it runs too hot (75 to 80 full load). I plan on doing a lot of audio/video transcoding and web development/possibly software development. And let's not forget gaming, especially when games start to really take advantage of multi-core.

It's kind of a battle with my roommate, but I try to keep it around 80*F. The air conditioning system is kind of badly-designed, so it really won't go lower than that during the daytime.

I wouldn't though. It kicks up the multiplier when you need the power, but when you don't, you save money on electricity (probably less than $100/year, but hey...)
