You don't want a w2k floppy, but rather, a simple DOS boot floppy. Bootdisk.com has many you can download if you don't have DOS or win9x handy. Whatever floppy you use, don't format it using w2k or it won't boot into DOS.

If your MB BIOS permits selection of IDE1 Master (D:) as boot device, you might be able to boot w2k that way. w2k will be unable to read the XP drive, and will presumable place its boot files on its own system drive (D:).

help dual booting XP with Mandrake.

Simplest way to avoid future complications is to create a partition for linux iusing XP and instruct linux install to use only that partition for itself. Also, to not disturb XP boot, instruct linux to put its boot files on a floppy, which you would then use to start linux.

Some programs would run from D:'s XP, but those requiring registry entries wouldn't unless you also installed them using D:s XP. You could use D:'s XP to periddically back up the C: drive, but that's a lot of work. Easiest to just back up C:'s important data, and reinstall XP on C: if ever you...

How to install Win98 on a Win2K machine for dual boot?

Since first partition is NTFS, win98 won't even be able to see it, much less boot from it. Since it's likely that second partition is logical drive in an extended partition, win98 couldn't boot from it either. Other than doing major surgery on the hard drive, only recourse would be to find a...

Urgent help needed with floppy. This has to be easy.

No idea why it happened, but the fix, so you can use w2k, is to not delete one of the floppies, and just have it reinstalled at next boot, but rather, to simply disable one of them in the current hardware profile.

Explorer crashes on linux partitions

I created the partition in w2k. left it informatted, and told Mandrake install to use only it for itself. No problem. Also told Mandrake to put LILO on a floppy in order to not disturb the w2k boot, so that if I remove Mandrake I won't have the bother of repairing the w2k boot.

By "locking up" do you mean the monitor display is present but no mouse or keyboard response, or display disappears? If the former, try another input bus (USB, PS2).

I put Mandrake 8.2 on a logical drive in an extended partition. It shows up in w2k disk management and explorer as an unformatted partition, and attempts to open it in Explorer are simply greeted with a message asking if I want to format it.

My W2k corrupted and did a new install, but have a few problems now...

The problem is you now have two separate win2000 installations on the same partition. The Documents and Settings folder likely contains the folders for both of them, of course under different subfolder names. Much confusion results from this, which is why it's best to have dofferemt wom2000...

Is there a way to lock a file so it cannot be deleted?

The solution was given above. Use NTFS and use security settings to set file or its folder as read only for all users but yourself. It will override network permissions.
