No i'm not ;) I already have the HDs, case and PSU, as well as a Gig of RAM that might be reused. I'm building a quiet system, doing that with a prebuilt is a pain in the neck. I'm building one that's going to be overclocked, again doing that with prebuilt can be a pain in the neck...

using LCD HD TV w/PC

You'll be able to use the monitor at it's full resolution (as far as i know) but the DVD itself is only going to be the standard low resolution stuff. If you had HD DVD or BluRay then you'd be able to watch the films at 1080P (assuming you've got HDCP compliant OS and hardware, or that HDCP...

Most Quiet Case??

The P180 is not the quietest case, it's a good mixture between noise and cooling. If you want quiet then look at the P150 or the Antec 900. The best way to quiet a computer is to use quiet components, only serrious modding can make a maxtor III serries HD quiet, but suspension alone is enough...

Rate My Build

Clarification: The corsair will let him overclock, but it's not the best out there for it. If you're not overclocking then don't waste your money on DDR2 800, just get 533 and be happy.

Spend more on the monitor, the daddy of the 20" range is the NEC GXW or something like that. Pop over to the video forum for the real model number but the short version is that it's great.

SATA II Problem!

It's not spinning up? That's not normal (and the award for stating the obvious), as is the refusal to boot. You haven't done something silly like plug in two power cables? (Some drives have legacy power connections as well as the SATA standard). Try booting with the seagate once that works...

Done researching, ready to buy (I think)

I have a raptor and i've got to join intrinsicvalue on wondering if it's really worth it. Knocks a bit off your media transcoding times, a bit off your BF2 load times, but are those seconds worth the extra $100 you're paying rather than getting a normal 7200 drive? Should get you nudging the GTX...

SATA II Problem!

Someone was telling you porkies, the 650i chipset is very recent and supports SATA II. Is it plugged in (you'd be amazed just how often this is the problem)? Does the drive spin up? Have you got another drive to test it with?

PC4200 or PC3200

Possibly, PC4200 sounds like DDR that's rated to run at 525mhz rather than 400mhz for the PC 3200. If so then you can use a stick (or two sticks) of each in a computer, but it'll only operate at the speed of the slower sticks, ie the 3200.

hdd question

They are both 80gig drives, as such they're both about the same speed. However you've stumbled across a faster method than most use. By splitting the install location away from the boot drive it means you'll have faster game load times than if the OS and game were installed on the same drive.

Box refuses to power after video card swap

Is it failing to boot with the orriginal setup? Unplug everything and leave it overnight. I thought i'd blown my CPU once upon a time, left it for a few days while i cried and then did a final test before taking a sledge hammer to it. Glad i waited now :)

Any 7200 RPM notebook / laptop hard drives with perpendicular recording?

430W Power Supply Question

The TPII range is ok, but they don't age all that well (ie they degrade due to age faster than most). If it's more than say three years old i'd be thinking aobut replacing it. As far as gaming performance increases go, no, none. The sound quality may improve but that's about all a new sound...

DVI-D versus DVI-A

My old HItachi CM174 has a crap VGA decoder, my shiny newer Samsung 930 has a pretty decent one. With the former it's painful using VGA rather than digital from the same source. The latter is hard to tell apart. Better decoders on the monitor end deserve a mention.

The PS3 doesn't appear to be making it's way to the EU any time soon. I think the expectation is that we're a year behind you, ie around this time next year there'll only be a handful in shops (they pushed the release date back and it'd be amazing if this was the last time they do it). As such...

Was going to go for the 2216WSD as recomended but some other git grabbed the last one (seemingly in the entire UK). So i've gone with the second choice option of the Asus, i'll just have to get used to the slightly off colours. Thanks all.

Antec SmartPower - are they reliable

It's not about under or overloading, it's just that at certain loads and with certain load types you get weird resonances, ie coil whine. However last i heard it's impossible to predict (or at least impractical) and nothing to be worried about. The odds are more like roulette than craps but it's...

Those are all iffy PSUs at best imo. You're looking at a low powered system, but leaving room for a possible upgrade to a DX10 powerdrinkingmonstercard i'd be looking at a decent 400-450W PSU. The antec NeoHE line isn't perfect but it's pretty decent ...

RAM caused crashes due to stick configurations?

Hiccuping every 45 seconds could be that you're running out of RAM (?) Check your peak useage when you're gaming (open task manager (not technically required) then alt tab out after 20mins or so and check under performance). You'd pretty much have to be in Vista for that to happen though, (or...

That's stupid enough to be true. Bloody tax laws. A vote for the Acer from Xtknight, it's got the desired DVI and VGA which is nice. Price is reasonable too. I'm used to the viewing angles and other flaws of LCDs, my first LCD was a Hitachi CM 174 (first 17" with 16ms response time!)...

1.52 on a single core is reasonable. Think you can boost it up a bit further if you want to live dangerously (Hell, why not? It's not as if it'd cost a fortune to get an equivalent CPU now is it?).
