I think you should go further... Each distribution has a different way of looking at the world. Where we are today, the words "Linux/Unix" actually convey very little about what someone can expect from any given Linux/*nix distribution, AS FAR AS "ease of use" experience goes.

Why stop at guns and children? I say you have to be able to pass a test after a certain age, say 18, in order to be allowed to continue living in this country. If you fail the test, you get deported to whatever country will take you. If no country will take you, you get euthanized to save you...

It means it's software developed by a company that doesn't share the source code with the open source community. Some people are annoyed that Nvidia, ATI, and others won't release their source code. The problem is, those companies spend a lot of money on developing their intellectual property...

I'll jump in and add a vote for Suse 10... Installation of the Nvidia drivers for my FX5700 based card was trivial. You do the install, then run the online update and choose the Nvidia drivers. Then you enjoy OpenGL flying. I'd recommend, if you're going to try Suse, to get the Evaluation...

I can think of a more likely scenario... We enter into a prolonged global recession, or God forbid, a depression, and that could and very likely would, barring some miracle must have innovation on Microsofts part, be the beginning of the end for Windows.

That's odd. I just went through and it looks like this is showing as part of the standard 10.0 distribution... EDIT - This may be a difference between the 64bit distribution and the 32bit.... You can grab an RPM from the following place...

That package is showing in Yast for me... Have you done on an online update lately? I found it in Yast by launching Yast, going to software management, then doing a search for "2200bg", and clicking on the checkbox near "description" so it will search the package descriptions and not just the...

ReactOS anyone ?

I'm not sure 100% would equal the same in wine, given that part of their project goal is to implement a HAL/aka ability to use NT drivers... That could give it a much greater functionality for certain things. I won't play with this until it's working under Xen.

Trouble installing Ubuntu and Fedora Core 4

Honestly, if you have that little RAM and just want to browse the net why not pick up DSL? It's a very small Linux distro that works very well with older hardware and smaller amounts of ram. http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ I agree with Robor, I would suspect your nic isn't being installed...

In that case, NO. It is definetly not less noobish in that regard. Slakware might be a good fit. I don't have enough recent experience with Debian to judge it.

I'm wondering if you guys who think KDE is ugly actually played around themes? I'm not trying to be a smartass, but my wife has commented more than once that my desktop makes her windows look like a dated OS... Could it be the theme? Dunno. Never could get into gnome, but to be fair, haven't...

I recommend Suse 10. But honestly, I don't think you could go wrong with either, based on what I've read of Ubuntu.

Honestly, if your goal is gentoo, jump in to Gentoo. As you still sound unsure of yourself, just make sure you have something useable you can boot into should something go wrong. But gentoo really isn't that hard, it just takes patience. It's a really fun distro for learning about lower level...

Finally starting with Linux

Personally, I would focus on learning how software installations/removal are done first. I would try to do as much from the gui as possible and focus on getting apps you enjoy. Any problems/bugs/opinions you get along the way, you should take the time to report to the Ubuntu devel team to help...

uname not upto date?

Did you update this through Yast or did you update it manually? It's my understanding that uname should be returning info directly from the kernel, not through a configuration file. I could be wrong on this, but this is how it was explained to me.

Looks like I froze my SUSE by editing etc/profile

Just went through the Suse install CD, because I remembered there being an automated type repair. For future reference... If you have a problem you can't fix, boot your install CD, act like you're going to reinstall... When you get to the screen for installation mode, it will list 2 things...

That's one helluva mix there. Too lazy to learn something new, yet annoyed with the distro's doing stuff through gui's, while also wanting to learn the CLI to do some heavy duty stuff, despite being too lazy to learn something new... A trollin' or confused?

I believe if you boot from installation CD, there is a rescue option on the menu. I'd give that a shot and see what happens. I'd offer more, but I haven't had to use the rescue mode of a Suse CD since 9.1, so I just don't know what you'll get or what it will be capable of. If that doesn't...
