I like to tinker though... Building a home computer might be a little more expensive than a dell- but at least you know what your getting when you do it yourself.

Mathematics performance and hardware

Is an aftermarked CPU heatsink worth it?

I know that going with an aftermarket solution from Zalman or Artic Cooling will lower the CPU temp- but will I gain performance improvement? I don't OC- and stock cooler keeps CPU in the mid 40's during usage. Would I see a difference in performance with lowering the temp by several...

Is it normal during SuperPI

As I'm poking around a little, it looks like my problem is (was at this point) related to fan speed. I cranked up the HSF speed and just passed 32M SuperPI simultaneous both cores.. Max temp was 47 degrees which seems pretty reasonable. Orthos blend passed 3 rounds as a prelim test this AM...

Computer just turned off after a few more minutes- temperatures are too hot.. I checked teh HSF, which is stock intel, reseated, seems to be in there properly. I did not use AS, as I thought it would be OK without. Anybody familiar with the intel HSF- How do I get the thermal pads off...

for your screen to go black after a few minutes? This is during testing at 16M both cores at 100%. e6600 at stock speeds/voltage. No manipulations. Thanks, Matt STD Blog

So turns out that the Dell CD lacks everything that would allow me to easily upgrade- cant even buy a legal key from Microsoft and use that. Basically stuck buying a new XP pro disk. Matt STD Blog

Does Intel DP965LT support 1.9V RAM?

Thanks everybody for useful replies... I am primarily using the computer for phylogenetics/population genetic simulation. Many of the programs I use are RAM hungry- i.e. R, matlab, PAUP, MrBayes, GeneMapper, Sequencher, etc. I would like to look ahead to VISTA, but will but not to DX10...

Yes, obviously. But there is such a thing as keeping ones options open. I just want to hear some peoples opinions on the difference between these boards in this regard. I'd be happy knowing that there wasn't a difference- the p965 board is alot cheaper.
