Well not exactly. It would simply be a controller chip that would be recognized through the PCI bus and allowed a place to live, but then it would be available to Windows and the driver would load.
Which is all good, but it's kind of hard to trade good sound for USB 2. :)

I'd agree that the PSU is a possible suspect... and you stated you'd done no overclocking so I assume that means the CPU or Video Card... because either could cause your issue as well.

Another hard drive wouldn't matter, because it doesn't boot with no IDE cable connected.
Basically you have to focus on this one from a minimalist perspective.
Do you have another PC to test the video card, RAM, and CPU on? Or some if not all of these?

You can always try it.. I believe your board will reset to the last good boot if you make a change that hangs the reboot.
Got an old 40 gig drive or something laying around? Toss that on there and boot to the install CD and try and clean install.
If it goes away you know something is hosed on your other drive/isntall.
A clean install only take about 20 minutes and it will definitely tell you if everything...
Have you tried the basics?
Reset the CMOS and see what happens? Also you've got multiple sticks of RAM in there...
Turn it off...
Pull all but one... try to boot. If the same thing happens switch that one with one of the others, cycle through all the RAM to see if the problem remains...

Well I work for a company that purchases a ton of Dell laptops. I will say that at the two year mark most of them are way ready to be recycled with keyboards and such falling apart. I'd definitely go 3 years.

In theory you could acutally put more wear on some components such as your hard drive leaving it on all the time, especially with indexing or other services running.
By the way this is a SkyHawk IMC6375 Barebones which has an Intel 865G chipset on the motherboard. I dunno if that helps or not. It's also not a problem in Windows specifically as it actually disappears from the BIOS POST report during boot.
