If you like IBM Thinkpads you will probably like Hewlett Packard business models, Fujitsu business models and maybe even LG electronics notebooks and SONY notebooks. All of these companies have well-built machines but, of course, the ThinkPads are still king of resilience.
Install your motherboard drivers to fix the low USB speed issue. I don't know what drivers AMD-specific chipsets use. Perhaps somebody familiar with AMD will be able to assist.
For read/write tests search for HDtune. It is a benchmark for drive speeds.
Along with the above suggestions I would add that it is always good to have someone familiar with computers around when the system is being built. Even the most seasoned assemblers have random problems with custom builds. Just something to alleviate further frustration. Good Luck.
ChiBOY83: Age of Empires 3 (AOE 3) is very graphics intensive. The game was released quite recently and uses some of the newest technologies in the 3D business.

What about color fidelity? Those incredibly sleek LG panels (1981Q etc.) can display only 16.2 million as opposed to the more popular 16.7 million. At this point I am more worried about this than pixel refresh rate.
The MX1000 has both forward and backward thumb buttons while the G5 has only one thumb button (as far as I can remember). That in itself is a deal breaker for me.
I am waiting to get one of those Logitech V400 dual laser notebook mice...
