  1. Xeon L5639 Overclocking on X58

to answer your ECC or non-ECC memory question refer to this, I believe: http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/asmo-na/eng/products/server/intelligentxeon/440799.htm
  2. Xeon L5639 Overclocking on X58

The king of the socket 1366 air coolers is probably STILL the Noctua NH-D14. Great mounting design, and performance. I have one on my X58 - just got my X5670 in the mail, and I'll be installing it this weekend. WEEEeEEeEEeeee! http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=34&lng=en
  3. Home Office Video/Audio Build (Budget)

No. Just no. Now, go back to your hole you troll. :P Why should I do the OP's research for him? I already did my own research when I built mine. Don't be ridiculous! And also you forgot to include the other half of my post...
  4. Whiskey gift - what to buy?

I figured the 'e' ruled out Bourbon o_O
  5. Are there any alternatives to Microsoft office?

I use openoffice, but I might switch to libreoffice, since libre is the continuation of the original openoffice (right?)... but I'm too lazy / unsure to switch. Whenever I turn in something at school, I export as PDF for two reasons. Nothing can be edited by the recipient, and the formatting...
  6. Whiskey gift - what to buy?

I like Ardbeg, Laphroaig (cask strength is a +), and generally Isla's but it's all personal preference. If you bought the two I listed, that would be pretty tasty and nice, IMO. Each one is around $60 I believe. Costco also has Blue and Gold label Johnny Walker, but I'm more of a straight...
  7. Home Office Video/Audio Build (Budget)

I'm in the middle of using my computer (playing DayZ with my friends), and I really believe YOU should do the research yourself since it's your decision and you'll have to live with the purchase/equipment. But, the main issue here is that Corsair doesn't actually manufacture anything. Most of...
  8. Home Office Video/Audio Build (Budget)

Well, this is a whole separate topic that already has it's own thread(s) here... I was merely making generalizations to make a point. I know the OP doesn't care, and I'm not going to change his mind, but it bothers me, so I assert my opinions. In other words, you will have to do your research...
  9. Home Office Video/Audio Build (Budget)

The PSU is like the food & water you eat everyday. It feeds your entire system. It's NEVER silly to buy a high-end PSU. High-end does not equal high wattage. People who are too cheap to do things right suffer the consequences. I've heard so many times about systems dieing because they didn't...
  10. Home Office Video/Audio Build (Budget)

Everything is relative. If something is worth doing, it's worth doing right. Why buy more RAM later? And why risk it with a cheap PSU? Sure it might work fine for years, or maybe a Seasonic X-series might be DOA out of the box, but why push your luck? He said he wanted reliable. You get what you...
  11. Home Office Video/Audio Build (Budget)

TERRIBLE CHANGES. OMG... no, my OCD is freaking out! FWIW, I guess the case isn't bad, but I just did a build with a Cooler Master Storm Enforcer, and that was my favorite case to build in. And I've used some good cases.
  12. Tiger Direct

LOL @ your finance ideologies... you shouldn't be ordering anything until you get out of debt. And, I ordered from TD once in like early 2000. Horrible back then, never went back. I've heard bad things recently.
  13. Home Office Video/Audio Build (Budget)

If you want solid and reliable, you don't buy a $60 PSU. I agree on Gigabyte boards, I'm a total Gigabyte fanboy. They make great stuff. I disagree with Charlie98. I would stick with 16Gb of RAM, actually. I utilize nearly all of my 12Gb at times and it's fairly cheap. I game, and leave tons...
  14. Do huge air coolers make sense?

I didn't want to mess with water. I bought a Noctua D14 - why? Because it's the best air cooler out there, or it was when I bought it. I think it's a thing of beauty, not ugly at all. The CM V8 GTS looks interesting from a design standpoint as well. But anyone who is worried about their cooler's...
  15. Build suggestions

Well, I should've said if you have the money, might as well get an Intel. But, I figure most people are on a budget, and you really don't need the best benching CPU for gaming and light office use.
  16. Build suggestions

Nope... Do not get an EVO (TLC sucks and Samsung drives are cheaply made from what I see around the web) and do not get a small 128GB drive. That's what I did and ended up with 2 SSDs even when I run a HDD for files and backup. I recommend the Plextor SSDs, but they are a little bit more money...
  17. Comparing old i7 to new i?

I'm running an i7 920 @ 3.4GHz and the only time it ever gets maxed out is when I run intel burn test.... and I run 2 monitors with about 9GB of applications loaded into RAM including games. I don't have ANY reason to upgrade until my system fries.
  18. Why do i need an 850w PSU to power SLI/CF

LOL - no dude... You sound like you don't know anything about electronics. He was right. You need the headroom. A 620w PSU isn't designed to run at 620w output constantly AND last for several years. Also, there are efficiency sweet spots for every different PSU. You're wasting your money (power...
  19. Is my PSU Close to Death?

Utilize the powers of eBay and Paypal buyer protection to get your money back. Not worth keeping and risking the loss, IMO. It's used and the warranty is void because of the seal being broken, so it's not as advertised, and it just plain seems fishy. Why not send it back? Does this PSU have...
  20. Retiring Asus Z68 MB....what to upgrade to

When did you start using the board? Is there a warranty on it? Mine is an older socket format and I'm going on 4 years of 24/7 usage on mine and have zero issues... So, with that in mind, I'd say choose the Gigabyte. I'm a total Gigabyte fanboy.
  21. for i7 920 @ 3.4GHz, which R9 series card is for me?

    Got it to 3.9Ghz @ 1.34v under load (195 bclk), 1950MHz DDR3
  22. for i7 920 @ 3.4GHz, which R9 series card is for me?

CPU-Z says my chip is a D0 and I changed some settings, and am running on 1.36v now at 190 bclk (higher than before). Thanks to this article: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/overclocking-the-x58-a-practical-guide.108526/ but STILL TWEAKING SETTINGS!!!
  23. anyone intimately familiar with Gigabyte X58A-UD5 BIOS for i7 OCing?

BTW, I found this article (I LOVE IT!!!!) that describes all the voltages for X58: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/overclocking-the-x58-a-practical-guide.108526/
  24. anyone intimately familiar with Gigabyte X58A-UD5 BIOS for i7 OCing?

I have Corsair 2000MHz C9 4GB modules (3 of them). Dynamic vcore is used when you want to use Intel speed step and the other power saving features. And that guide is the exact one I used this time. I have a better one in my bookmarks, but that one is OK... and no, the RAM is on 10x right now...
  25. anyone intimately familiar with Gigabyte X58A-UD5 BIOS for i7 OCing?

I have my system 99.9% stable for 24/7 gaming/surfing/multimedia/vent server/word processing/etc but, it did crash today. I'm not sure which voltage to raise. the CPU dynamic vcore is already 1.39v under load and the QPI/VTT is 1.47v already. I can't run any lower. Should I be messing with...
  26. for i7 920 @ 3.4GHz, which R9 series card is for me?

I'm waiting for an ASUS or Gigabyte card to be released with their heat sink and fan solutions and possibly OC edition. Also, I checked out the 7970Ghz and it's too big, and has too many DisplayPort. I would like to get TrueAudio on the card, I guess, just to have it. Upgrading to Haswell...
  27. for i7 920 @ 3.4GHz, which R9 series card is for me?

I'm not sure what stepping mine is, but it takes a lot of juice. I'm running level 2 (load line calibration?) with the dynamic vcore up quite a bit, so that puts it at 1.39v under load with 1.47v QPI/VTT (if IIRC)
  28. for i7 920 @ 3.4GHz, which R9 series card is for me?

I was thinking the R9 supports MANTLE, while the the 7970 doesn't support it. Is that true or false?
  29. for i7 920 @ 3.4GHz, which R9 series card is for me?

Ugh... this 920 chip is a slug... but I finally got it stable @ 3.8 with 1850 DDR3 (185 bclk) It's taking 1.38v Thanks for all the great responses! I don't want to stop you guys.......
  30. for i7 920 @ 3.4GHz, which R9 series card is for me?

Yeah, I'm definitely waiting for an ASUS or Gigabyte with their cooler designs and stuff... TrueAudio might be nice to have, on second thought. However I'm NEVER going with a surround system. I have a great stereo setup and surround is too tricky and invasive in an apartment.
  31. Corsair rant, my advice, avoid them.

Yep, they should be recalled - I agree. I just hope my K90s lights don't start going out.
  32. Never Settle bundle updated for R9 Series Cards; Battlefield 4

Originally, wasn't it only for pre-ordered BF4 combos? (Just asking, this is not a rhetorical question.)
  33. Corsair rant, my advice, avoid them.

It's not that simple, actually. The Corsairs have multimedia controls, a USB port. And the higher-end models are backlit and have programmable macro keys. I looked at many mechanical keyboards and it was hard to find one that has multimedia controls, which are a must-have for me.
  34. for i7 920 @ 3.4GHz, which R9 series card is for me?

I was thinking I was going to get a R9 290X until I started reading around, and noticing my CPU will be bottlenecking a 290X, so which R9 is for me? 280X? 270? I don't think I'm going to need TrueAudio, just mainly interested in maxing out the CPU and MANTLE. The system is in my sig.
  35. Corsair rant, my advice, avoid them.

Well, that's entirely up to the person buying the item, but I usually buy the item with the features that I want. I don't worry about RMA routines because I rarely need to RMA anything, and EVERY company has bad reviews on the net.
  36. Corsair rant, my advice, avoid them.

Wait... I don't want to watch your whole video, but I have a quick question (and I own a Corsair K90 and M90) Are you complaining about having to pay for shipping back for the RMA? If so, that is pretty standard for any company. You pay to ship it back, and they cover shipping of the fixed or...
  37. Quality Gaming Headphones / Mic Questions

I would look into these if I needed a gaming headset, but I just use a Shure 849 condenser mic (XLR) on a stand on my desk, and some crappy Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones: http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Per.../dp/B008O515CK it's cheaper to buy the above headphones than all the components of...
  38. Differences in audio chipsets

True audiophiles don't use the onboard audio. They use rack or desktop outboard converters and preamps.
  39. Need new GFX card...

I don't know if there ever was a QUALITY 400w PSU... but it could be I supposed. What make/model is it? Does it have a PCIe power on it?
