learning a language in my free time... anyway to validate or get credited for that?

I don't think it would be too important to spend money and effort on getting certifications. When I graduated with a CS degree, I had several interviews and no one ever really asked about specific languages that I knew let alone had certs. Mostly general OO stuff, design patterns, talk about...

I feel unprepared entering the job market

I just graduated with my CS degree as well. Like some of the other posters have said, emphasize what you have done. At my school, Java was the main language used, however, we did have a languages class where we did some Lisp, Prolog, and perl projects, we had assembly programming x86 and MIPS...

Functional Programming

HP touchsmart

that was part of the problem I couldn't even use a boot cd to start this machine. It was a bad hard drive though, I opened it up, unplugged the HD and got it to post. Installing windows now on a spare I had. Thanks for the suggestions.

Second PSU failure

specs- asrock am2 motherboard, 1 sata hdd, 1 dvd burner, cpu is an amd 3800+ socket am2, 2 sticks ddr2 512MB. There is no discrete gpu, uses onboard video and sound, I would think 300w would be enough, maybe it does need more.

The sound Windows makes when web browsing

I'm using win7 pro this worked for me- control panel-hardware and sounds- under sounds choose "change system sounds". under the sounds tab scroll down to windows explorer, the start navigation is there change it to none, click apply-ok.

does this system have a new drive or is it the original? If it is the original I would wipe it clean with boot and nuke first, then install windows. If it's a fresh drive try checking the RAM with memtest, if it passes install with 1 stick only then install the other sticks later.

true, your laptop has to be able to do tv out for those to work. If not you can use a converter box, monoprice has one for about $30, here.

sounds like a heat problem, try turning up your 4850's fan speed with catalyst cc under the overdrive settings when gaming.

What is your all time favourite CPU?

I'd say my x2 4400, can't believe I paid almost $500 for it in 2005, with what you can get now. It was a great upgrade though, first new system since my p3 500MHz bought in 1999, was finally able to play some current games again. Sold it for almost $200 last year, regret it now.

try using a cat 5 adapter like the one posted above. Fiber optic is another option but usually pricey.

its a driver problem, can you start in safe mode? If you can try reinstalling your video driver, sound driver is another likely cause.

New computer : Unable to install OS

try installing with 2 GB of RAM, the install the other 2GB after you're done. Also, I would use IDE DVD drive and unplug the SATA DVD drive while installing. Make sure the jumper is set to master. I've had trouble in the past installing windows with more than 2GB RAM.

Best choice for installing Windows on external drive?

I agree with both above, any external option is limited and takes away portability. An esata pcmcia card and drive enclosure will probably cost around 60-70. Not sure if this is the correct board, but I found a motherboard for that laptop on ebay for $90. Gateway 200ARC mobo

noob help!- DVD not recognized by XP

does the drive show up in device manager? Is it recognized in safe mode? did some quick searches, looks like most are suggesting deleting upperfilters and lowerfilters in the registry. Here is an artcile on how to do that.
