    Switch cables and see if that solves the problem, maybe even try flipping the cable around (I'm assuming you're using the C to C cable) and see if one end just makes a bad connection with either the computer or the enclosure.

    Buy the opteron, with an XP-90 and a good fan you should hit 2.8ghz on air with under 1.5v. You can possibly do 3.0ghz on air (I do 24/7) but it will cost you more voltage and generate a lot more heat. Your ram will limit your OC more than anything else, make sure you know the proper timings...

    Opteron idle temp

    That doesn't sound like it's off by much, maybe 1-2'C. Before I OC'd my opteron 148 I was reading idle temps at around 23'C and load temps at around 27/29'C, granted it was cold on those days. I've OC'd to ~2.9ghz and my idle temps are 27/28'C with loads peaking at ~38/39'C. I'll admit that...
