The government pays our teachers next to squat for their altruistic profession, and look how wonderful the education system is in the U.S. Sarcasm off. Paying doctors less is only a part of the financial problem anyway. Medical tests and equipment costs money. Drugs cost money. Hospital...
I think most medical students, and (to a lesser but probably still very significant extent) doctors are better, more altruistic people than you give them credit for. The training is hell, and you don't go through it for the money, or at least, that's not going to sustain you. Am I going to...
I agree this is a huge problem in America. We need to focus more on health prevention, but what type of system is going to fund community based preventative health-care initiatives. Free market capitalism? Not likely. Communicable diseases are a community problem. And the poor are the...
Thanks GLeeM! What makes you think we crunch fewer QMD WU's than other folks? Are AnandTech folks AMD fans to a greater degree than others? I have to admit, I haven't owned an Intel in quite some time.
Oh, yeah. I may be biased 'cause I'm in Med School, but the docs aren't sucking up the money, trust me. It's healthcare management. Executive salaries. Drug companies advertising allergy drugs on TV (they're all the same, advertising just drives up the cost.) Excessive testing and treatment...
Healthcare is a fundamental human right! That being said, yes, socialized medicine can suck. An interesting compromise might be a voucher system. That is, each U.S. citizen is entitled to a voucher from the government, for say $3000 a year for healthcare. This could be used to buy a budget...
I agree with your point and that is a sticking point. The choice, in my mind, was to refuse the Chinese government and then, yes, loose its marketshare in China (although I wasn't under the impression it currently had much...it was often completely blocked when I was there...the Chinese usually...
With all due respect, Chinese society is something I feel comfortable speaking about and something I have a fair amount of experience with, and citing cultural relativism is not always appropriate. I firmly believe that there is absolute right and wrong, and curtailing free speech as a means to...
I spent last year teaching English in southern China, and spent 2 years of my childhood in the politically sensitive city of Hong Kong, so this all hits pretty close to home. Let?s just say that personal experience has not left me with the greatest image of the Chinese government. While I...
Yeah, one of the attractive things about DIMES for me was that I could run it ALONGSIDE my F@H clients, but I don't suppose VMWare and F@H would be too compatilbe with each other? Mapping the internet is cool and all, but I'd rather not pull boxes away from cancer for it.
Let me be the first of probably many to say "Of Course!" to AMDnewbie2006. Anyone who puts the number 198 in the team box is a memeber of TeAm Anandtech no matter what forums you choose to peruse. And a big WELCOME to ya! :D
True that! Someday maybe I will too...."Mr. Johnson we'll be installing a pacemaker that will automatically sense and adjust heart rate and rhythem, blood pressure, and dissolved oxygen, oh, and in its spare cycles it will be running F@H and beaming the results back to Standford. Enjoy!
I'd like to know who's over a 150GHz. Must be nice having a salary! ;) Some day I'll fold with something other than scrapped parts, but then...that would almost ruin the challenge. Happy Crunching!
Thanks Gleem! Yeah, I've been getting a lot of like 25 point WU's the past few days. I'm not sure what effect it's having on my PPD, but is that normal?

My best day ever and probably your worst day in a long while. Don't fancy I'll see that again anytime soon. ;) Thanks for the stats though, I always love 'em.
LOL...I "shared" a beer with my very first computer in college, and I don't think she liked it very much. Had trouble with the CD ROM drive for a while until I tought myself how to replace them. Any other ideas? Some of you big crunchers must have one or two.
So my main gaming/working (too much of the former and not enough of the latter) computer is quickly approaching 100 WU's for F@H. Not a large number, I know, but I'm just starting out. I'm just wondering how you guys celebrate your computers' milestones. How do you give a computer a treat...
If it's not too late, one more vote for F@H. Great project with TONS of potential for future benefits for humanity. But I hate to knock the rosetta peeps, their project looks pretty great too. It's your MHz, you decide. :)
What do you guys think of a team e-mail to the project heads to clarify the VMWare thing. We are, afterall, trying to help them out first and foremost. Might want to get their opinion on it.
I used to run SETI@HOME on my computer because it looked "cooler" but I quickly realized that folding proteins for a possible cure was a much more worthwhile cause and stuck with that. But that doesn't take away from the fact that DC is an experiment in DC itself, that is, it's a test of its...
