A few questions about nv40 and r420

1. the R420 has programmable pixel shaders, and offers MPEG,DIVX,REAL und WMV-HD decoding (WMV-HD needs a 3Ghz PC to play, with ATI´s card a 2-2,5 will do. That is a major feature compared to NV40 who CAN´T decode WMV-HD) 2. I checked out some reviews(I think it was AT) and the NV boards where...

Any suggestions for a *cheap* card for cheap DVD HTPC?

If this rig is a pure HDTV rig (i.e no gaming) then go for Matrox G550 or G450. They offer a very good TV-out (better then nvidia and ATI) and are passively cooled meaning no fan that can fail and make noise :-)

Just got my Antec Sonata

Not wanting to upset the first poster, but that PSU that comes with the Sonata is a modded version of their Smart power 380. It is way more quiet then the one you can buy in stores and comes only with the Sonata, so maybe you can get it from the store where you "left it". It is really a decent PSU.

Is the Radeon 9100 the same as the Radeon 8500

ATI intended the remaining Radeon 8500 (last model was the 128MB 275/550) to continue under the 9100 name. The 9000, which was released previously, is basically a "MX" version of the 8500, so a kind of 8500le with half the pixel pipelines. So go for a 9100 if it is a 8500 you crave :-)
