Lubricant for Power supply 4 pin connectors?

dielectric grease would work as it doesn't conduct electricity, I see it often used in spark plug boots. I am not sure if it would work or not as far as getting the cable on/off easier?

****UPDATE****Looks like a dead hard drive, anything that can be done?

If an IDE cable is plugged in upside down, the mobo won't post which could be why it wouldn't post till you removed the hard drive. The harddrive should spin when powered up though, provides it plugged in of cource

What does INSTABILITY look like? Need help.

The quiting to the desktop sounds like a driver issue. Seams like something happened simmilar driver related when I had a Voodoo3. The GPF sounds like plain crashing. Do you have the latest version of UT? is your video card overclocked? 50C is pretty high, in general I would want to keep it...

RAM overclocking question

its possible, it depends on the ram how high it can go. You could try it and if its unstable just go back to PC100 if you have a 900mhz processor running at 100 (9 x 100 = 900mhz) and you overclock it to 115, it will be (9 x 115 = 1035). Hard to say if it will overclock that much or not, only...

please HELP, building new PC!!

is the CPU fan plugged into the mobo or a PSU plug? try unplugging all the HD & floppy cables from the mobo and try to power on. If the cables are plugged in backwards its not going to post.

Slight pauses in XP Gaming

Just installed windowsXP clean install, all my computer games experiance slight pauses from time to time. The game itself will stop for a second, and then resume. This is kinda a pain online as I will freeze in mid air for a second before resuming. Installed the lastest XP drivers Reinstalled...

WinME -> XP What?

I agree with bevancoleman, I tried to upgrade my brothers 98SE comp to XP because he really just uses it for internet and Half-life.. it worked ok, installed fine, but it had a few quirks. Photoshop always had kernel32.dll complaints, weird one second freezes while playing games, etc Backed up...

All the comps I built were cheaper than prebuilt ones, but mainly because like stated before I recycled some of the parts, and all of the software.

looks like upgrading will get you a better computer, for cheaper. But if it would be upgrading your parents computer, and not yours.. you might just want to get your own.

What would you do if you were in my situation?

Definatly go with the monitor. A nice monitor will last alot longer than the fastest video card / processor When I first got my Sony 19" Trinitron, the fastest video card / processor was a PII 400 and V2 SLI's. Now we have the Athlon XP and Geforces 3s.. and the monitor doesn't need any...

Trouble with Geforce2gts

texture tearing sounds like vsync is off. Try turning it on in the openGL settings. in CS, tweak your config make sure your fps_max is above 75 also, if you have a slower CPU, turn off any 3D sound. It creates a large CPU overhead. Hope this helps!

Mixing different versions of Nvidia detonators drivers

its been done, I used to have a mix set.. but as DocDon said, new drivers every week makes it hard to figure out what is the best OpenGL ICD, which is best for DX etc not really worth the bother for 1-2 more fps

monitor drivers are mostly the same right?

technically you can mitch and match because they just say "These are the compatable resolutions, color depth, and refresh rates" you can also create your own monitor inf file so you don't have to worry about accidentally sellecting a setting that is incompatable.

Please recommend a good burn in software

I found that using Quake3 (demo or retail) works well. Join a large open level, q3dm17 is good.. set 0 time limit and 0 fraglimit. become a spectator, and then add a large amount of bots. Enough where it runs somewhat choppy while watching from above (enough to stress the system) and let it run...

Any performance loss from AGP 2X to 1X?

doubtfully every time I have tested, at most I have lost 1fps this been done on several systems PII-400 with G400Max " " with voodoo3 P3-600 with voodoo3 p3-600 with SDR p3-800EB with SDR p3-800EB with GF2

Can OCing mess up your HD?

If you run the PCI bus at to high your HD data will become corrupt before your HD will die. set the PCI bus back to normal, format, and reinstall everything. Should work ok.

Remember the days of Quake in 3d? I would love to, so how can I with a GeForce Vid card?

after you install quake and GLquake make sure youd delete the Opengl32.dll that is in your quake directory. I think its a 3dfx dll or somethign odd like that, and quake tries to use that instead of your Nvidia drivers.

Maybe the manufactor thinks that people on a large scale will not notice the bad rf filters, and decided to save the 10cents per item because on a large scale it adds up to alot more profits. They figure techies are only a small portion of the people buying, so its really just the reference...

how much of a difference is there?

loading, booting, etc, will all be much faster My computer is a PIII-800 with a 5400rpm drive, and my brothers is a K7-700 with a 7200 both are using ATA/66 and his computer boots in half the time mine does :(

ok, my guess is that is the problem the AGP port requires a good amount of power in itself, and you have a pretty hefty load going (looking at your system). Any athlon is recomended to have 300w PS. I would get an Antec 300w if you can, they are pretty cheap and are really good stability wise.

Thermal Paste????

Paste doesn't really get that expensive, I think its worth getting some Artic Silver. That way you have some good, well cooling paste if you ever need it for another CPU or whatnot.. it costs less than $20 with S/H, and it will keep your 850 running for a long time :)

Keep in mind that PS2 running at 200hz doesn't run at a stead 200hz refreshing. There is a program out there that lets you test, and it ranges from 20 - 200hz with no real stability to it. USB on the other hand runs at a constant 100hz. For the guy that had problems with something being jerky...

I need a killer sound system

I say ditch the computer speakers and go for hooking it into a home system if you have the cash I hooked mine up to an AIWA system and it sounded amazingly better than my Boston Pro 5peace set.

The Ge-Force 3 is worth buying for Quake 3 alone

On the same topic here Installing linux Q3A is worth it to play it in software mode! I can run it in 320x260 with nothing turned on and I get and the FPS never dips below 5!! Great eh! I can see if it runs any faster with a geforce3 if someone donates me theirs ;) ;) ;)
