Amd's semi custom apu speculation thread

Have you actually seen an AMD based Android tablet? Is there one on the market? I would love to get my hands on one.

    [Techspot] FX power vs performance

If you look at the graph, they all rail at 60 FPS, they did not turn off Vsync or remove the cap from the .ini ... it was a worthless bench more or less other than concluding AMD's best could barely even push it to the 60 FPS cap.

S/A: AMD kills Kaveri, Steamroller, Excavator

Indeed, the take home message is the same whether it is the old IDC data set cubic fit or the theoretical quadratic functionality, voltage is the largest power modulator knob.

S/A: AMD kills Kaveri, Steamroller, Excavator

With all due respect to IDC, Abwx is correct, in the limit that Pdynamic >> Psatatic and Pdynamic >> Psc, the power is quadratic with respect to voltage and linear with repect to frequency. http://bwrc.eecs.berkeley.edu/php/pubs/pubs.php/418/paper.fm.pdf (see p. 3) If those assumptions above...

This did not seem correct.... A google yielded this http://technewspedia.com/yield-per-cycle-at-3-0ghz-bulldozer-vs-husky-vs-piledriver/ Did you mean an old old A64 core like 2005-2005 era or the more recent stars cores?

AMD delays the delay -Kaveri- is its last competitive market gone?

Indeed, Intel's cache implementation far exceeds what is found in the Bulldozer/Piledriver core. Consumers couldn't careless about die size, but AMD sure does.... Being competitive has two faces, the consumer side (which you are ineffectually arguing) and the cost side (which you are...

AMD delays the delay -Kaveri- is its last competitive market gone?

Now, overclock each to the best stable and 24x7 usable OC and rerun these tests. Who would win? People's point is that AMD's flagship is topped to the hilt on die space, power, and usable clock and you can barely call it competitive. If used by enthusiast who do enjoy squeezing more via an...

Best and worst CPUs since 1998

Worst from Intel -- hands down,Prescott. Best From Intel -- the quad penryns OCed nicely, then Sandy turned out very good, hard to pick. AMD best? opty 130 or the x2 3800. Worst from AMD -- K5 or Agena (Phenom I) would be my votes. The worst CPU I have ever owned has to be a tie between...

AMD Announcement: ARMv8 Opterons In 2014

Samsung is working on ARM based server parts for release in 2014, at 32 bits ARM is inadequate for a large server application, but with instruction set V8 it becomes viable. http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20120809193237_Samsung_to_Unleash_ARM_Based_Server_Chip_in_2014_Report.html...

[allthingsd.com] AMD getting ready for another round of Layoffs

At the time AMD announced the intention to acquire ATI, ATI had a market cap of about 4.6 billion, AMD had a market cap of around 8 1/2 billion. Right now AMD is about 2 billion. A few googles you will find cases, based on market caps, were ATI surpassed nVidia a few times. Overall, the ati...

    should i get an i5 2500k or amd fx 8120 8 core??

It has already been released, and it wasn't a driver, Microsoft had to patch the kernel. http://www.custompcreview.com/2012/01/13/updated-windows-7-amd-bulldozer-2/ Or http://www.anandtech.com/show/5448/the-bulldozer-scheduling-patch-tested It didn't do much. The "full power" involves some...

    Bulldozer Owners Real World Thread

The low thread count performance is very poor on bulldozer, which makes it impractical for a gaming CPU, even at that price. The 4100 will also be in a shared resource scenario for thread count > 2, which pushes the aggregate per thread performance even lower. You are better off from both a...

    a phenom x4 II 960 or a fx 4100/6100

@ OP The PII 960, it is overall the better cpu for the money, all this other jibberish isnjust fanboy fluff. There ais plenty of data on the web for the FX CPU to help you decide.

Do you own a Bulldozer CPU?

Don't get to hung up on the TDP, overall the older PII's are a bit more energy efficient. Do some research as well, in most any case ( I.e. there are one or two exceptions), an FX-4100 or FX-6100 will be at best a side- grade, and more probably a downgrade from you current setup.

    normal temp for phenom II?

You don't need to stop, the CPU has built in mechanisms to throttle down if it gets too hot. You don't need to worry about ruining or damaging the CPU. Side note -- using a cooler different than the stock cooler actually voids an AMD warranty :). How strange is that?
  23. J

    normal temp for phenom II?

It does appear to be running a bit hot. A few things, read up on AMD's spec sheet on the max spec temps, they are usually 60-65C depending on the product. Also, AMD does not publish calibration information nor do they factory calibrate the on die thermal sensors, so it is really anyone's...

    Bulldozer, Massively unoptimized

I am curious... just how much more threaded do you expect software to become? I ask this because the multithreading era, at least on the desktop, began quite awhile ago and was kicked off as early as the 'craptastic' P4 with hyperthreading. It was not long after the hyperthreaded P4 that...

Best way to Spread Thermal Compound

To echo above -- the most common mistake with TIM is to put too much, the second most common is to put to little. Spreading it is really a non-issue. Some people put a dab (BB or grain size) in the center and let the pressure of the HSF spread it naturally, others spread it with a razor blade...

questions about my intel 2500k setup

I will take a crack at answering your questions. 1. When Intel introduced Nehalem and dynamic clocking (Turbo Boost -- how I hate marketing crud) the Intel processors have had the ability to read/monitor current. Intel's dynamic clocking is controlled by the PCU (power control unit), a...

    In defense of "Bulldozer"

Actually, AMD gained marketshare in every quarter until Conroe was released, 14 straight quarters of gains (see AMD's Q3 or Q4 2006 quarterly report transcript). They gained in server from around 5% before Opteron to about 26% before Woodcrest. In desktop, they owned as much as 80% of the...

    8 Core Nehalem

Nehalem is currently scheduled for release in Q4 2008, considering that Intel demonstrated a functioning chip, booted and running software Sept 2007, I think the likelihood that they will make this timeframe is quite high. http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/c...ay/20071015155739.html Here is...

    OMG Intel 45nm........

Read the article again, Intel is 'supposedly' delaying the launch to ensure that the CPU will work in the low quality boards. Your P35-E is NOT a low quality board, but since Intel is ensuring lowest common denominator you have no worries.

    OMG Intel 45nm........

Intel uses a parallel bus system, as such, there are at least one routing for each bit in the bus for each block in the transaction. For Intel 64 bits, thus 64 separate lines ... An electron traveling down a wire must be pushed by a voltage, a traveling electron will also lose energy as it...

    OMG Intel 45nm........

Ok... read the story carefully ... if it is indeed true (the rumor mill is in over drive on this one), what Xbit says is that Intel is changing the packaging to ensure that it will be flawless in the 4 layer PCB boards..... in which case you have no worries. Second the Asus P5K is a high end...

    "TLB errata" bug

Actually, when the bug occurs the system hangs. At least that is what has been reported, and is what is listed at errata 254 in AMDs errata list.

    "TLB errata" bug

Well, Viditor and I are arguing over salient points... there is indeed an errata in the TLB that is pushing out the higher clocked parts. The reasons through are not clear, it appears to be a bug in the logic but only manifesting itself at higher clocks and full load... this is why I lean to...

    "TLB errata" bug

The NB clock (I assume your looking at memory clock) in this case is not under 400 MHz because of a 'fix', it is because they are using DDR2-800 (400 MHz standard clock) but AMD's odd and 1/2 multipliers do not allow it to hit 400 MHz -- the odd multiplier and all -- AM2 K8 CPUs do the same...
  37. J

    "TLB errata" bug

The exact report of the TLB by AMD is that it only demontrates itself under full load conditions on some CPUs -- i.e. supporting the hot spot theory (process variation and all). Regardless, it was enough that AMD felt that they could not guarantee quality at that bin, hence they pushed it out...

    "TLB errata" bug

Well, I would not have brought it up but I have seen this repeated by a few other sites. I had a wiff of the pre-BA stepping errata (by accident, it was stored on a non-secure server) and this bug was there from the beginning. It simply does not make sense to me that 2.4 GHz shows the error...

    The end of AMD

Yeah, this is a good point -- by itself, without the inevitable comparision to the other guy -- the Barcelona/Agena is a success. It was a massive overhaul, retaining the basic structure of the K8 which, clock for clock, did in fact improve significantly IPC wise over the prior generation...

    "TLB errata" bug

That was not my understanding.... in the current review samples, the TLB buffer is still on, and because the bug exists they won't launch the 2.4 GHz CPU. If you think they are taking a 10% hit now resulting in the current data I think you will be in for disappointment. The reviewers clearly...
