    Best bang-for-buck $300 - $500 Notebook

Friend of mine is looking to get one for college. He only wants it to do papers, communicate via facebook, take notes, etc. No games, folding, audio/video creation, or anything hardware-intensive from the sounds of it. What would be a good catch? Thanks in advance.

So I need to obtain HD content in order to use HD content. Makes sense, and I suspected that but wasn't sure. Thanks guys.

    480i to 1080p?

Is there anyway to convert, say AVI files, to MPEG4? I have Cyberlink PowerDirector 7 and am curious as to how I can make HD music videos. At the very least I'd like 720p, but am unsure how to up the quality of the existing files I have. I'm guessing I'd have to obtain a raw version or, at...

Customer satisfaction. I understand that the Clear Sky issue isn't a high priority, but I thought they would at least acknowledge it as a problem.

    4850 vs 9800GTX+

Sorry, it's not my rig. But judging by that picture, it looks like it would be a pretty tight fit. Why not just go with a different case?

    4850 vs 9800GTX+

It would still be a very tight fit once you get all of the connectors going where they need to. Had the 4850's 6-pin connector been placed on the long edge of the card (the top) rather than the short edge (the side), it's shorter length would have paid off better. Here's a pic to help...

ATI 4890 vs nV GTX 275 reviews

I remember a review or two commenting on the limited availability of the GTX 275 for the launch. Wouldn't have been noteworthy had the 4890s not been as available as they were/are. It's not nonexistent, but it isn't up to demand yet. Still, no sense in really bickering about it from an...

    Your Take on PhysX

Yeah, this was a list another member was maintaining in his sig showing which games, upcoming and current, support PhysX and to what degree. It looks like there are going to be some good titles implementing it. That said, I just hope we get better physic implementations in general, not...

    Image Quality Bug

I believe the author mistyped. It appears in the article's forum link that he's only acknowledging the issue occurring on 4800s: [/i] This site also echoed the same findings: [/i] Issues like these are pretty rare and occur on green and red hardware alike. (e.g., NVidia and the Crysis...

ATI 4890 vs nV GTX 275 reviews

Actually, I'd rather ATi put the power connectors on the top like the GT200s do. Sure, the 4890 is shorter, but then you have to account for the room the PCI-E connectors are going to take and the slack needed. That actually extends the space required for it to fit in a smaller case. Had...

    Your Take on PhysX

Thread should have had a poll. For me, it's the following in order: Price/performance Image quality Heat Power consumption THEN any other goodies like PhysX or CUDA I admit, PhysX did factor into my purchase, but I didn't base my purchase on it. I based my purchase...

ATI Havok GPU physics apparently not as dead as we thought

That's true. But (also outside of GPU) Havok is used in a plethora of titles - more than there are titles using PhysX. Granted, part of that is because of its age. I'm not saying I know which is "superior" (again, outside of GPU-AP). I'm just saying that it seems like developers enjoy...

ATI Havok GPU physics apparently not as dead as we thought

No, no. Don't misconstrue me. I think I understand how ATi picking Havok physics is contradicting behavior when comparing Havok and PhysX alone. It's just that I think I can understand their "picking between two poisons" if Havok was willing to give their SDK via OpenCL, especially if ATi...

ATI Havok GPU physics apparently not as dead as we thought

Yes, indeed, it is. But I was talking about CUDA and OpenCL. I'm confused. Dave Baumann clarified that they'd be happy to use either Havok or PhysX. So long as it's not through CUDA, they're fine. The OP showed Havok running on Radeons through OpenCL. Had PhysX been available through...

Yeah, I'm not bilingual and can't imagine how I'd probably sound trying to speak a foreign language. for being talented enough to come this far. Just keep at it and you'll get fluent in no time. Don't take pompous criticisms to heart; Engrish is pretty funny and it's no one's fault.

ATI Havok GPU physics apparently not as dead as we thought

Closed: not public; restricted; exclusive. Proprietary: manufactured and sold only by the owner of the patent, formula, brand name, or trademark associated with the product. I wouldn't say it's completely a farce or deceitful; while CUDA was offered to ATi, it is still closed and...

    GPU Image Quality

Yeah, that's why we were talking about super-sampling modes. Skewed Grid, Rotated Grid, and Ordered Grid super-sampling are all methods of eliminating that. Only features that cause some blur are the super-sampling modes themselves. It's pretty incremental though compared to the huge...
