^ RAID1 is not protection against data corruption. It only provides hardware redundancy, allowing continuous up-time should one of the drives in the RAID1 array fail.
^ Kudos for being willing to try your first build (& you'll receive encouragement & advice here if that's the way you go), but starting out on a tight budget can make it a frustrating experience for a first-timer (not being to get the items you'd like). And it's hard to beat the mass production...
Build now if you need it now. But if it is solely for unreleased titles, then build it as close as possible to release date when more is known about how thesoftware performances on different hardware, & when price/performance for your budget will be better.
^ Agreed - 8GB is nice if you have the money to buy it up front (prices on DDR3 are pretty good currently) but 4GB should be plenty for general gaming.
5 hours with Memtest isn't very long when you have 8GB to test. Have you tried just 2x2GB at a time?
Any particular game causing this? Gaming is different to stress-tests.
^ Or a busted sensor/calibration.
Stop worrying & love your in-spec temperatures. Leave the angst to those who by design or fate end up really pushing the official limits.
^ Glad to hear your feedback on the build!
So what sort of SATA cable (length, connectors) are you looking to get, just to run from the SSD in the bottom of the case to the motherboard's SATA3 ports?
^ Dell don't make them. By reputation at least, most PSUs in Dell systems have good reliability - and it's in Dell's financial interest (considering the number of extended warranties they sell!).
How is it failing? Please try to provide a more detailed description of the change in your situation that has caused this fail. For example, you have moved from two monitors to two different monitors - please specific the connections (DVI etc) and resolutions at each stage.
Firstly, idle temps are notoriously inaccurate. See the other threads in this forum about CPU temps/sensors/calibration.
Secondly, how low did you expect? Air cooling isn't going to push your temps below ambient, so results will also vary depending on whether your computer room is baking...
OK, you've provided some information for getting advice... but to make things easier, please post back here with the answers to the questions in the Sticky Thead: " NOTICE - PC builders, when asking for input on YOUR projects Please Tell us..."...
^ The Palit card mfenn linked? Looks like a vanilla reference-style card, so you are not paying extra for frills or a factory-overclock. IIRC Palit own Gainward, and are not some no-name brand.
mfenn is correct to point out the minimal difference between Win7 Pro and HomePremium. Just as long...
^ Are there 6970 1GB versions available? Anyway, the 6970 is AMD's top-of-the-line single GPU, but it is only a little faster than the cheaper 6950 (available in either 1GB or 2GB versions). The 6850/6870 are good mid-range cards (well-balanced with 1GB).
Your gaming res puts you on the cusp...
Just because you have activity on all four cores does not mean that your game is making use of multiple cores. The OS scheduler moves tasks between cores (at a fast rate, faster than polling rate) to balance load. When an app only fully uses a single core, TaskManager will usually show...
^ Agree that almost any recent low-end card would be fine for a dual-monitor desktop. There's plenty of choice of mid-range cards with DisplayPort - even some low-end AMD cards have DP, and the high-end AMD cards should have 2 (or more for the Eyefinity specials).
That's just the way that WEI rates components. Not say that you won't get a great boost from an SSD for your OS, but don't set too much store in WEI as a benchmark :P
^ Next to the finger for connecting crossfire bridge. It's a very small switch with positions marked 1 & 2 (1 = flashable BIOS, 2 = read-only BIOS). See AnandTech's article from the 6950/6970 release for pictures.
^ Yes, an adaptor or caddy is the simplest choice for legacy IDE. OP should consider getting a new, fast SATA drive for the OS/boot partition rather than rely on an old slow IDE HDD.
^ So which drive is the new rig booting from? And did you do a fresh install for the new build?
And 50C load is really good, especially seeing as it is such a small delta from idle.
