    Subwoofer has hum. Toss it?

Yeah, a humming is usually a sign of a ground loop between the power and the signal cable. If it is floating the hum could also be from an unterminated input.

    Emerson brand plasma TV?

Emerson Electric Company (Network Power, Process Management, Insinkerator etc) is a very well respected company. Emerson the consumer electronics company is not affiliated with the Emerson electric company. Their TV's, microwaves and radios are definitely low end.

Netbooks all seem about the same

Does anyone know how the dual core 1.6GHz atom will compare to the 1.3GHz Core 2 Duo SU7300? I would expect the Core 2 Duo to be faster than anything labeled Atom, but 300 MHz faster on a stripped down architecture leaves me guessing quite a bit.

    Cheap Multi Zone Receiver

Depends on what you are really trying to achieve, but Pioneer makes good audio equipment and since you are looking for cheap I say go with the cheapest non KEH, KLIPS or BOSHE brand amp you can find :p

Does this look legit or is he BSing?

To preface, I am an electrical engineer, I have built a CMOY myself in my lab at work, and basically it is nothing more than an OP-AMP being used to buffer/gain your signal. The premise being the signal generated by your computer (especially a laptop) is capable of recreating the Voltage of...

Looking for a cheap 32" LCD with a built in tuner

That Panasonic will work and is definitely a good choice. I think Panasonic makes some of the best 32" LCD's out there. These days it is getting tougher to find "HD Ready Monitors" instead of HDTV's. About 3-4 years ago, finding a large screen LCD that wasn't an "HD Ready Monitor" was tough...

In market for a Bedroom TV

That is a nice TV especially if you are going to use it as a computer monitor. You definitely won't be let down by the picture quality on it, though I don't find the built in sound on Samsung LCD's to be slightly lacking (my bedroom Samsung LCD is attached to a very modest sound system)...

help with the best 19" hdtv

I have a T260HD which I bought last year and is basically the big brother to the T220HD and I like it quite a bit because I use it 80% of the time as a second PC monitor and 20% of the time to actually watch TV. The reason they call the T2X0HD's monitors and not TV's is they use PC resolutions...

Need massive help for purchasing a new TV

For PC use an LCD is definitely recommended over a plasma due to potential Image Retention issues (only if you get careless typically). Also for PC use, 1080p is definitely what you want. 1080p = 1920x1080 as a computer monitor 720p = 1280x720 technically means as a computer monitor...

Need massive help for purchasing a new TV

The V4100 is last years model. If you get a Sony, make sure it has 5000/5100 in its name for this years model. If you get a Samsung make sure it is a B series as A series TV's are last years.

A 2 pack of TVs? (Edit: Model numbers added)

The Plasma is last years TV and the LCD looks like it might be a 2009, but I cannot tell since they don't list its model #. This deal is by no means bad considering 900 for a 46" and 1600 for a Plasma is a very good deal for either. Looking at 2009 models, a 58" Samsung plasma is about...

Surge protectors for HT and PC

    Boston Acoustics VR500 sub

Depends on the break. I had a friends speaker which sounded just plain terrible at certain frequencies. It looked fine at first glance. Upon closer inspection the glue on the edge of the speaker used to create an air seal to the body of it had broken down. I used some epoxy to reseal the...

Surge protectors for HT and PC

As an Electrical Engineer I would like to point out that while Westom is correct on several of his points, his rants are just plain ridiculous and not worth reading. Yes, a surge protector is generally just a surge protector, having an attractive plastic/metal case on the outside does not...

    THX Cert Speakers

That is because companies selling high end speakers typically do not make pre-boxed packages like cheaper companies usually offer. They generally sell each speaker individually (or in Pairs). If you want a full THX certified set, pick a LR front set, a matching center, and grab 4 surrounds...

    LCD tv's to consider....

I had a Sceptre TV about 2 years ago and I would not touch them with a 10 foot pole. Thank god it was from Costco so I could return it, because it was awful. SD looked like absolute garbage, the VGA input barely worked on any normal resolution and 720p scaling even was lacking pretty bad...

    Panasonic or Samsung Plasma?

Last year I would have said Panasonic hands down. This year Sammy has definitely leveled the playing field, but I think that price on the S1 makes it a hard panel to shoot down. The big addition to the G10 is the THX mode and it is reported to have better blacks, so you need to decide if the...

logitech harmony owners, u guys go through batteries this quick too?

How long do you have your backlight set to? I have a 550 in my bedroom that I have never changed the batteries on in like 8 months now. I used to have a 676 in my living room that easily lasted 3-4 months. Now I have a Harmony One and I generally charge it once every 3-4 weeks on average.

Advice needed regarding 32'' TV purchase

For PC use as slick mentioned, 1080p is pretty much a must. For all other uses of a 32" TV though, 1080p will not really gain you anything unless you sit 3-4 feet from it. LG makes good TV and I am sure you will be happy with it. However, if I was buying a 32" 720P TV I would pick up the...

    Need to replace 55? HDTV

Sadly, you are not going to find anything to match the sound quality of your current set. Flat panel TV's all seem to have much weaker sound than the bigger projection based TVs had. LCD: Vizio has a 55" 1080p LED LCD coming out within the next couple of months that should be pretty nice...

Differences between Sony Bravia LCDs? (V,Z,W, etc. series)

To answer your question, yes Sony makes good TV's, no they are not worth the difference in price. NTB is right on the distinctions for the 2009 model series (5100s). The 4100 V series doesn't to 120Hz, but the 5100 does.

Is 480i/p all the same on a PS2?

Just to clarify: Component uses three wires. One Luma, or the Y (white/black/greys), Two Chromas Pb (Blue - Y) and Pr(Red - Y) which create the images color. S-Video uses two wires. One Luma and One Chroma (Containing both chroma signals out of phase with each other) Composite sends all...

$10,000 budget for dedicated theatre build....

Why are you using Car sub woofers with an external amp instead of getting an eD or HSU sub? I have no experience with that brand, but I have yet to hear a car sub that would sound proper in a home theater, but I assume you have done some research on the topic.

    Video frame rates

The difference in speed between 30 FPS and 29.97 is negligible (.1%), the conversion process only involves changing the header to play it back at one vs the other. As mentioned you should be able to accomplish this in Virtual Dub, though there are many other ways to go. Overall though, even...

    Looking at these 2 panels

Wow, that could not be any more wrong, since the display type has no bearing on the content being viewed. A blanket statement like that is just ridiculous in so many ways. 60'' flat screen value

I could be wrong but I do not think Sony has ever made a 60" LCD that can be wall mounted. They have made several 60" LCOS rear-projection TVs (which weren't very deep, but not wall-mountable the same way an LCD/Plasma is) including the A3000 and XBR2. For LCD they have made 70" and 55" and...
