    suggestions for a switch?

My original search was for an unmanaged gigabit switch (which this Dell 27xx should do OK as). Since this is a home network it shouldn't be a big deal, the mgmt capability was only a freebie from my perspective. cmetz, thanks for the heads-up on this Dell model.

    suggestions for a switch?

I was in the business of evaluating silicon chipsets (Broadcom, TI, Intel) for Chineese switches, selling and OEMing said switches in the USA market a number of years ago. Some of the Acton switches made it into CIsco as OEM products. Not all of these switches are crap, as many used the...

    suggestions for a switch?

cmetz, I just bought the 8 port mgd version of this Dell 27xx switch for home use ($76). Could you elaborate (point me to more info) on the crashing and less than wire speed performance articles/references ? Wonder who the original OEM was for this hardware ? I know Compaq inherited...

Where can I get a DVI out for my Foxconn 6150?

The foxconn board with the onboard dual display DVI + VGA output is the 6150K8MD -8EKRSH. The 6150K8MA you have does not support that capability with onboard video.

    WinFast 6150K8MA-8EKRS TV-Out problem?

Yep, that's why I have the WinFast 6150K8MD-8EKRSH on the way, as it has a DVI and VGA and TV out for video, and lists dual monitor output as standard. I ordered it before I found out it may not oc as well as the MA version you have. With nvidia, the only way to get both PC and TV output is...

Which to get... Biostar TForce6100-939 or MSI K8NGM2-FID - 939?

OC aside, the Biostar mb won't work as an effective htpc with it's 6100 based onboard video, because it doesn't support the critical hw accelleration (MPEG2 decoding, deinterlacing, etc) for SD/HD TV displays like the 6150 based chipsets DO. Check nvidia website for chipset/video card...

    Anybody recently buy AMD?

AMD, in my case 939, because I want tried and tested mATX solutions that work with linux and onboard video for multiple htpc frontends/backends in a networked htpc setup. (MSI 6150 mATX w/ 3200+ S939 frontend) AM2 mbs are likely to be there quicker (maybe already) and be less expensive than...

    AMD X2 HTPC build

IIRC, the onboard 6150 solutions are more like 6600 video card solutions with respect to hardware acceleration features like De-Interlacing and Inverse Telecine for htpc use. The 6150 onboard video has more htpc capabilities than the 6200 video cards (check out nvidia's website for a comparison).

    6100 vs 6150 mATX motherboards?

Looks like the 6100 doesn't support dual-monitor configs - i.e. Twinview. Here is what I found googling: "Frequency is not the only point of difference between the GeForce 6150 and GeForce 6100, though. The former and more advanced IGP supports TMDS/DVI interface and dual-monitor...

    6100 vs 6150 mATX motherboards?

I'm looking at a Jetway 939GT3-PTD mATX mb, with DVI and VGA outputs. Anyone have any hands-on experience with this nvidia 6100-based mb? Is it new? Looks like it might have a reasonable overclockable BIOS, hows the quality of caps (brand)? Looking for a mATX mb (nvidia chipset) to...

How to flash a NIC's MAC address?

Thanks cmetz. Doesn't matter how many OS distros I try (XP SP2, Ubuntu, FC4, FC5, puppylinux, freeBSD, etc), I get the same problem every time. I know how to use ifconfig in linux and ipconfig in XP to change the MAC address to something else, but it's obvious the EEPROM for that...

How to flash a NIC's MAC address?

Thanks p, But I'm currently running freeBSD (actually m0n0wall firewall software) on this mb, so a win application isn't gonna cut it. I was hoping for some info on what the mfgs use as a program, as I remember using a standard PC on ethernet to do it to the Macintosh nics we manufactured...

How to flash a NIC's MAC address?

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Hardware: Tyan S2425 (P3) dual onboard ethernet nics Problem: One of the nics has a MAC address of FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF, the other nic is fine I'm guessing it didn't get flashed correctly, or someone messed with it. I can sorta get...

Critique my Home Theater PC Please

Following along with Dave's line of thought on the socket 939, I'd give the mATX MSI k8NGM2-FID motherboard a look, especially the extensive thread in the MB section. The 6150 chipset of the MSI and ASUS includes MPEG2 hardware decoding while the Biostar's 6100 chipset doesn't No video card...

19" Widescreen LCD, DVI, 5ms, $189.99 shipped, NewEgg

The 4x3 19" Hanns is going for $109 after MIR at PC Connection (plus free shiping for $250 invoice), and I bought an 8 port SMC 10/100 switch to get there ($25) This was just too good to pass up and even though a widescreen might be nice I don't want to give up the vertical real estate...

FLAMING BAGS OF POOP HOT! Monster Fiber Optic Ultra 1000 4ft $16.97!!!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad/questionable news, but the Toslink protocol (i.e. the fiber optic protocol) used for digital audio transmission was designed for approximately 15 feet maximum distance (IIRC). Some people have reported success at 25 feet, but it's probably a case by case basis of...

    Turn Off PXE Boot function

When selecting drivers in one of my linux test sessions, I used (selected) two different drivers for the nics: 1) eePro100 driver for the Intel Pro100 82599 nic, identified as 82559 in the BIOS 2) e100 driver for the ICH2 8252EM nic, identified as ICH2 in the BIOS I've also...

    Wild MAC Address in hardware?

I finally got a workaround. m0n0wall has a MAC address spoofer in the WAN setup subsection where I'm able to enter the actual MAC address that is written on the metal top of the RJ45 connector. So I'm not just pulling a random MAC address out of thin air. This configuration works just fine...

    Turn Off PXE Boot function

Peter, Understood. PXE only shows the ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff MAC address. All of the various software utilities I've used (XP and linux) show this same MAC address for this port. I was just asking if the standard configuration for a PXE dual onboard ethernet motherboard was one port with a...

    Wild MAC Address in hardware?

Thanks clever, Unfortunately my plan is to use a FreeBSD based firewall (m0n0wall) as the OS on a CF Flash memory card. I'm currently using linux to debug my MB's dual-port onboard ethernet PXE boot problems. I don't know enough about PXE to know if mine is a standard PXE implementation...

    Turn Off PXE Boot function

Peter, I'm actually not trying to use PXE (no PXE server), I've just found no way to turn PXE off, because the CTRL S setup utility won't allow me to toggle the default to local boot instead of network boot. I want to use both ethernet ports as part of a firewall (m0n0wall) based on freeBSD...

    Turn Off PXE Boot function

I have a P3 Intel 815e chipset MB (Tyan S2425) that automatically wants to boot thru PXE and no matter how I answer the config screen (CTRL S) for local boot options, it never saves my changes. This is based on Intel Boot Agent version 2.6.004 (ICH2 TEST). I go into the BIOS and change...

    Wild MAC Address in hardware?

Thanks Spydy, Yep, I've run ipconfig in XP and ifconfig in linux and everything shows up OK with a static IP assignment (except for the MAC address), but it's interesting that it won't check out a DHCP address from the server. By the way, this is a dual onboard 10/100 ports MB and the...

    Skt 754 Mother Board
