If the computer slowed down gradually it could be due to too much installing an uninstalling of softwares, cluttering the registry.. This could be a likely cause, especially if its an old computer. Try some registry cleaner software, they're very effective.
Sorry, I read your post again. Seems like you have no compiler whatsoever.
Try installing gcc from your Suse CD/DVD or download the installer (I think its an RPM). You need a compiler to compile a compiler here, but you have none.
Linux without gcc is as dead as a rock. Trust me you need it.
Can you quote the error? Do you have gcc previously installed?
btw I'm surprised you didn't have gcc already on your Suse box.
I really need to know this. Would it really have fried? I mean it would shutdown itself right? What are the chances you ended up with a burnt processor?

Take the advice everybody's offering as a warning. Try and understand what's being predicted IS possible.
Do whatever you want, just keep your eyes open and your head straight.
I'm not sure its the same problem but one of my PCs always shows a STOP error on shutdown. This could be due to an IRQ conflict, although I'm myself unsure how to correct that. That could be one direction of thought. I'm positive mine isn't a hardware issue btw.
Sometimes power supplies can't take enough load. I overheard my local computer builder say this once... but in that case the fans start and die. See if you can swap another power supply for a change and try with it too.
Try cleaning everything before you get a new motherboard. Are you under...
I have NTFS and once after reinstalling windows (XP professional) without formatting a drive I (apparently) lost access to a particular folder (more specifically the ATI drivers folder) such that there's no way for me to delete it. I know NTFS DOS might be able to do it but I don't want to take...
What could be the reason for a random lost display where no fan stops, but things like the CDRW and the LAN Card have their LEDs blinking at 1 second intervals?
This is the second time I've run my machine for more than 10 minutes without crashing, mostly because I think I ran it after a few days.
One thing I notice is that whenever it freezes no fan/psu/light misbehaves.
Hi
I'm on my machine now... Its been running for the last 15 minutes without crashing. I hope it stays that way.
I installed ATitool and it seems my card doesn't have temperature monitoring enabled.
Also... here's a screenshot of my CPU temperatures.. they have been much beyond that and...
Hi..
Thanks for replying.
I use Intel Active Monitor which sufficiently well gives me my temperatures (or so I think).. and they presently happen to be much less than what my motherboard has seen. Is MBM better in some sort? Even if it is I'm going to have a hard time installing and using...
Long story. And I'm a newbie. As much as I never touch the insides of my machine myself.
Ok.
It began 2 years ago (August, 2004) when I bought my machine with the following specifications. No points for deducing its not an awesome cooling setup:
Pentium 4 2.8 GHz 1 MB L2 cache (Prescott...
